HP ENVY 6020e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

After 3 years the printer won't connect to the internet. The status light is purple pulsing outwards.. forever. Is this a printer connection firmware/software failure? Time for a new printer? Print and scan functions still work through a USB cable.

@PeeBee52, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand your HP ENVY 6020e All-in-One Printer is showing a pulsing purple light and won’t connect to the internet, though USB printing and scanning still work. I can help you get this sorted.

A pulsing purple light on the HP ENVY 6020e indicates the printer is in Auto Wireless Connect (AWC) mode, waiting to connect to a Wi-Fi network.

This can happen if:

  • The printer was reset or lost its Wi-Fi credentials.
  • There was a firmware update or router change.
  • The printer was idle for a long time and lost connection.

Step-by-Step Fix

Restore Wi-Fi Setup Mode

This puts the printer back into a state where it can be discovered by the HP Smart app.

  • On the back of the printer, press and hold the Wireless button for at least three seconds.
  • This confirms the printer is in Wi-Fi setup mode.

Re-add the Printer via HP Smart App

  • Download or open the HP Smart app on your Windows 11 PC or mobile device.
  • Make sure your device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want the printer on.
  • In the app, click “+ Add Printer” and follow the prompts to reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi.

Update Printer Firmware (Optional but Recommended)

  • In the HP Smart app, go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Tools > Printer Updates.
  • Install any available updates to ensure optimal performance.

If the printer fails to connect:

  • Restart your Wi-Fi router and printer.
  • Try connecting using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) if your router supports it:
    • Press the WPS button on your router.
    • Within 2 minutes, press and hold the Wireless button on the printer until it starts blinking.
