Microsoft Windows 11

Just installed the HP Smart software on my new HP LaserJet MFP M234sdw printer.

I only want to print over Ethernet locally.

I only want to print locally from PC Windows 10 or 11.

I noticed that WiFi from the HP is transmitting a WiFi signal and can be seen by anyone nearby.

I want to completely Disable the WiFi signal for security purposes.

How can I do this?

A clear explanation will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi @Okanagan-Jeff,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To disable the WiFi transmitter signal on your HP LaserJet M234sdw printer, you can follow these steps.

Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  • Ensure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer via Ethernet.
  • Open a web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge) on your computer.

Find the IP Address of Your Printer:

  • Print a Network Configuration Page from your printer to find its IP address.
  • The IP address is usually listed under the "Network" or "Wireless" section of the Network Configuration Page.

Access the EWS of the Printer:

  • In your web browser, enter the IP address of the printer in the address bar and press Enter.
  • This should take you to the Embedded Web Server (EWS) of your printer.

Navigate to the Networking Settings:

  • Once in the EWS, look for a tab or link related to "Networking" or "Network Settings".
  • Depending on the printer model and firmware version, the exact location of these settings may vary slightly.

Disable WiFi (Wireless) Connectivity:

  • In the networking settings, locate the option to disable WiFi or Wireless connectivity.
  • This option may be labeled as "Wireless Settings", "WiFi Direct", or similar.

Apply the Changes:

  • After finding the option to disable WiFi, click on it.
  • Save or apply the changes. The printer will then stop broadcasting its WiFi signal.

Confirm the WiFi is Disabled:

  • Once the changes are applied, check if the WiFi indicator light on the printer turns off.
  • You can also verify by searching for available WiFi networks on a nearby device to ensure the printer's network is no longer visible.

Print Locally via Ethernet:

  • After disabling WiFi, your printer will only be accessible over the Ethernet connection.
  • Make sure your Windows 10 or 11 PC is connected to the same Ethernet network.

By following these steps, you should be able to disable the WiFi transmitter signal on your HP LaserJet M234sdw printer effectively, enhancing security by preventing unauthorized access to the printer's wireless network.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your helpful reply.  That solution does work.

I had found this solution by trial and error a day before seeing your post.

I would like to mention, that as a new user of this printer software, I was initially quite confused by al the different icons on my desktop and all the different options.  I was very, very frustrated that there was no "easy" way for a new user to just intuitively be able to turn-off the WiFi Broadcasting transmitter.  That should be an up-front in-your-face option.

The reason I didn't find this solution sooner is partly because my Chrome and Edge browsers were blocking access to the HP Web Server via local HTTP protocol.  Due to Chrome/Edge security settings, they were blocking access to Non-HTTPS web sites, which the local HP web server access is HTTP, non-secure.

Because of these browser blocking issues I wasn't able to access the EWS service as advised.

Somehow, after many attemps, by browsers now connect to the HP web server via HTTP:// and now am able to easily turn-on/off the WiFi transmitter.

On my M234sdw HP printer it is called "WiFi Direct", as you mentioned.

It would be very useful to new users if HP could make this feature easier to find and turn-on/off.

Thank you for your good explanation of how to do this task.

I hope this post and your answer helps other new users of the HP printer software.

Jeff
