HP OfficeJet 6958 All-in-One Printer
ProductP4C84A
I installed a new router. When I tried to enter the router PW to sync with my HP printer, I was unable to find the "dash" character. I only see the "underscore" character. My printer is useless unless I can figure out how to find the "dash" character on the printer.

Hi @PaulSI
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're having trouble entering your router password (which includes the "dash" character) when setting up your HP OfficeJet 6958 printer with your new router. This is a common issue when trying to input special characters, especially since many printers use simplified interfaces that don't show all possible characters.
Here’s how to resolve the issue and find the "dash" character:
Steps to Enter the "Dash" Character on the Printer
When entering the password for your router on the printer, you should be able to navigate through the keyboard on the printer’s display panel.
Access the On-Screen Keyboard:
- On your HP OfficeJet 6958, go to the Wi-Fi Setup screen. This can be done by navigating to the Wireless Settings or Network Setup options on the printer’s control panel.
- Choose Wi-Fi Setup or Wireless Setup Wizard to begin connecting the printer to your router.
Use the On-Screen Keyboard:
- When you are prompted to enter your Wi-Fi password, the printer will display an on-screen keyboard where you can enter your password using the touchscreen.
- You should see a variety of characters, but if the "dash" (hyphen) character is not showing up right away, look for an option that allows you to toggle to a different set of characters.
Switch Between Character Sets:
- Often, the dash character ( - ) can be found in a secondary set of characters.
- To switch between different character sets:
- Look for a symbol or numeric key (like “1/2” or “ABC” at the top or bottom of the keyboard screen). Tap it to cycle through different character options (letters, numbers, and symbols).
- The dash ( - ) will likely appear in this set of symbols or special characters.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
