Greetings, When I try to print, I am asked for a fax number, even though I am not trying to send a fax.  If I press the PRINT button, I get a message that the printer failed.  I just want to print a document.

Hi @Tom527

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your printer is mistakenly trying to initiate a fax process when you try to print, which is definitely frustrating. Here are a few steps you can take to resolve this issue and get your printer back to normal printing mode:

1. Check the Printer’s Settings

  • Some HP printers have a Fax option enabled by default, especially if they are All-in-One models with fax capabilities. This might be causing the printer to ask for a fax number when you're trying to print.
  • Turn off Fax mode:
    • Go to the printer's control panel (this is usually on the printer's screen).
    • Find the Fax settings (usually in the Setup or Preferences menu).
    • Disable or turn off the Fax function if it is enabled.
    • Ensure that the printer is set to “Print” mode and not “Fax” mode.

2. Check the Default Printer on Your Computer

  • Ensure that the correct printer is set as the default in your operating system. If the fax printer has been set as the default, it may cause this issue.
  • For Windows:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on the desired printer and choose Set as default printer.
  • For Mac:
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Select the correct printer and click on Set as Default.

3. Check the Printer’s Software Settings

If you're using software like HP Smart, HP Printer Assistant, or another app for printing:

  • Open the printing software and go to Settings.
  • Ensure that the fax settings aren't enabled, and verify the printer settings are correct.
  • Update or reinstall the software to make sure there are no glitches that might be causing this issue.

4. Reset the Printer

A simple reset might help clear up any misconfigurations:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the printer from the power source for about 30 seconds.
  • Plug it back in, power it on, and try printing again.

I hope this helps.
