I have a Laser Jet Pro MFP M479FDW. Ever since I bought it, I've had issues with scanning.
First, it wouldn't scan to a network folder, I could only use the email scan but it worked pretty much all the time. Then I moved across the country and got new internet (same router and modem) and then I couldn't do email scan anymore. But, I figured out how to set up the network scan. That worked for a few months and then it would say "unable to connect to network". All the while, printing has never had an issue. When this network problem would happen, sometimes if I unplug the machine and plug it back in, it would work. Other times I had to go back through the wizard to set up the wireless network. It would scan to network folder then I'd try a second scan literally 2 minutes after the first one (the printer didn't even sleep) and it will say "unable to connect to network".
Why is it having such a problem? BTW, this is all done from the machine console which is what I like to use. I have used the HP app - which is cumbersome and annoying - and it seems to work. But I shouldn't have to do all this garbage just to scan.

Hi @Flying_NEB,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M479FDW losing its wireless connection for scanning. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
**1. Check Network Stability
- Verify Network Connection: Ensure that your Wi-Fi network is stable and that other devices are connecting without issues. Intermittent network problems can affect your printer’s ability to stay connected.
**2. Update Printer Firmware
- Check for Firmware Updates: Outdated firmware can cause connectivity issues. Go to the HP support website and search for firmware updates for your specific model.
- You can check and update the firmware directly from the printer’s control panel:
- Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
- You can check and update the firmware directly from the printer’s control panel:
**3. Reconfigure Wireless Network Settings
- Reconfigure Wi-Fi Settings:
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Setup Wizard.
- Follow the prompts to reconnect the printer to your network. Ensure that you enter the correct network credentials.
**4. Check IP Address and Network Configuration
- Verify IP Address: Check if the printer has a static IP or if it's getting an IP address via DHCP. Sometimes, IP conflicts or changes can cause connection issues.
- Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel to check the IP address and network status.
**5. Check for Interference
- Reduce Interference: Make sure there are no physical obstructions or electronic devices causing interference between the printer and the router.
**6. Reset Network Settings
- Reset Network Settings: Reset the network settings on your printer and reconfigure the wireless connection.
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network Setup > Restore Network Defaults.
**7. Verify Network Folder Setup
- Check Network Folder Settings: Ensure that the network folder settings are correctly configured:
- Go to Setup > Scan > Network Folder Setup and verify that the folder path, username, and password are correctly entered.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I did all this before I ever contacted you. As I said in the description of the problem, I reset the network and then and scan...once. But as soon as I try again, even if it's within seconds, it loses the connection. I can print just fine. That tells me there's no issue with the network itself nor is there interference.
