Hi everyone,
I recently bought a Wi-fi 6 router for my home Wi-fi network and couldn't ever connect my HP LaserJet wireless printer to this Wi-fi 6 network by using either a direct out-of-the-box Wi-fi of the printer or a wireless connection of my Macbook or mobile phone. After trying several methods, I finally figured out how to set up the new SSID and password on the printer's localhost device conguration by using a USB cable without using HP Smart or any HP app. So, I'd like to share the steps with you in case someone is facing a similar issue. Note: This solution is from my personal experience only. I am not a HP expert and will not be held liable in any way for the risk, danger, injury, or damages caused to the other party or devices based on the knowledge that I share below.
Pre-requisite
1. Your HP LaserJet printer has a USB cable that you can hardwire to your laptop.
2. You already restore the Wi-fi setup mode of your HP LaserJet printer.
Example: To reset the Wi-fi setup on my HP LaserJet printer, I have to press and hold the wireless and cancel buttons together for 10 seconds until the power button is flashing.
For all other models, you can watch https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vNA30JXxfcY or refer to your HP printer manual.
3. Your Macbook is connected to your Wi-fi network that you want to set up with your HP LaserJet printer.
4. You know your Wi-fi network name (SSID) and password.
Steps
1. Connect your HP LaserJet printer to Macbook by using a USB cable.
2. On Macbook, go to System Preferences => Printers and Scanners => Click "+" button. The Add Printer modal will launch onto the screen. The HP LaserJet printer name should show up on the Add Printer list with "USB Multifunction."
3. Select the name of your HP LaserJent printer from the list.
4. Click the "Add" button. Macbook will start setting up your HP LaserJet printer that is hardwired to your Macbook. After Macbook finishes the setup, the printer name will show up on the left column of the Printers & Scanners.
5. Double click the HP LaserJet printer name from the Printers list. That will launch a modal of the HP LaserJet printer status.
6. Select a gear icon from the HP LaserJet printer status modal.
7. Click "Show Printer Web Page" and "OK."
That will launch a page on your default web browser showing the HP LaserJet printer's device configuration. The page will have a URL that contains HTTP protocol, localhost, and port number.
Example: The localhost URL of my HP LaserJet printer's device configuration looks like this:
http://localhost:58824/hp/device/info_config_network.html?tab=Networking&menu=NetConfig
Note: I think the port number of each HP printer will vary depending on how HP originally set it up from their factory.
8. On the HP Device Configuration page that is running on your localhost, select "Wireless Configuration."
9. Set up your wireless configuration.
- Status: On
- Configuration Method: Join an existing wireless network.
- Network Name (SSID): Select your Wi-fi network name (SSID) from the list.
- Authentication Passphase: Enter your Wi-fi password
10. Click "Apply."
If the printer is connected to the wireless network successfully, the wireless button of your printer will stop blinking.
11. Disconnect the USB cable from your Macbook.
12. On Macbook, go to System Preferences => Printers and Scanners => Add Printer again. Now you will need to add a printer that is now available on your Wi-fi network.
13. Follow the process of setting up this printer with Wi-fi on your Macbook.
14. Try to print a document from your Macbook to make sure that the wireless printer setup is now working correctly with your Wi-fi network.
That's it! Have a great day, everyone!
