HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw

Hello everyone. I had a brutal cybersecurity attack in my home that affected every device connected to my wifi. I’ve not been able to use my HP printer since because when I run the HP wireless network test report and the network summary report, it reports a “fail” for the security portion. I have purchased a new router and it is PW, but I am hesitant to place this printer back on my network until it can pass. Will restoring this printer to factory settings fix this and  how do I do this? Thank you.

Hi @gm9991,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Restoring your HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw printer to factory settings can help reset any security settings that may have been affected by the cyberattack. Here’s how you can restore it to factory defaults.

Power On: Make sure the printer is turned on.

Access Menu:

  • From the printer’s control panel, go to the Home screen.
  • Navigate to Settings.

Factory Reset:

  • Scroll to and select Restore Defaults or Service.
  • Choose Restore Factory Defaults or Restore Network Settings (depending on the menu options available).
  • Confirm the selection when prompted. The printer will reboot and return to its factory default settings.

Reconnect to the New Network:

  • After resetting, connect the printer to your new, secure network. Go to Network Setup in the printer menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard, and follow the prompts to connect.

Run Wireless Network Test:

  • Once connected, run the HP Wireless Network Test Report again. This will verify the connection and check if the security status now passes.

A factory reset should clear any previous network configurations, which may be contributing to the "fail" message on your network test. Just make sure that your network security settings (like WPA2 or WPA3 encryption) are properly set on your new router.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Alden4 thank you for the help. I performed your actions and was able to reset to factory settings and re-connect to my home WiFi. I printed a Wireless Network Test Report and it passed in all categories.

However, when I printed a test document on my iOS device, it gave me a pop-up warning notice indicating the device name does not match the name of the device I was printing from. After printing the Configuration Report, I observed in the “Product Setting” section that the “Host Name” differed by 3 additional characters (compared to what was communicated to my iOS device). I’ve already added an admin PW to the printer and ensured my WiFi settings are secure. Should I be concerned about this discrepancy?
