HP DeskJet 2842e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi I do not have internet access for my HP printer, so I have it wire connected directly to my computer.  It has been printing fine, but now will not print unless I connect to internet.  I have an Printer Information Report that says without an internet connection you might lose the ability to print very soon.  Can this printer be used without internet??

Hi @jbward

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The HP DeskJet 2842e All-in-One Printer is part of HP's HP+ program, which requires an active internet connection to enable certain features like Instant Ink and cloud-based services.

Unfortunately, this means that the printer may lose functionality if it is not connected to the internet, even when using a wired connection.

Why Internet is Required:

  • HP+ printers are designed to stay connected to the internet for firmware updates, ink monitoring, and other cloud-based features.
  • Without an internet connection, the printer may eventually stop functioning as intended.

Possible Solutions:

Switch to Standard Mode:

  • If you opted into HP+ during setup, the printer is locked into this mode. Unfortunately, it cannot be reverted to standard mode without replacing the printer.
  • If you did not opt into HP+, you may be able to use the printer offline by disabling HP+ features.

Contact HP Support:

  • Reach out to HP Support for clarification on whether your printer can be used offline. They may provide additional options or guidance.

Consider a Non-HP+ Printer:

  • If offline printing is essential, you might consider a printer that does not require internet connectivity for basic functionality.

Yes, you can still use your printer without an internet connection if you are not subscribed to Instant Ink and purchase your own ink cartridges.

However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:

HP+ Features: If you opted into HP+ during setup, the printer requires an internet connection to access certain features. Without internet, some functionalities may be limited, but basic printing should still work.

Offline Printing: Ensure that the printer is connected to your computer via USB or a local network. This setup allows you to print without relying on an internet connection.

Firmware Updates: While you can print offline, the printer may occasionally require an internet connection for firmware updates to maintain optimal performance.

If you encounter any issues with offline printing, feel free to let me know, and I’ll guide you further! 😊
