@tgaffer, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP printer is defaulting to the Fax function when you try to print, which is why you're seeing the prompt to "Enter Fax Number." This can happen if the Fax is selected as the default printer or if the print job is being sent to the Fax queue instead of the actual printer.
Here's how to fix it:
Step 1: Check Default Printer
- On your Windows PC, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Look for your printer listed twice, once as a regular printer and once as a fax device (e.g., "HP OfficeJet Pro 8600" and "HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Fax").
- Right-click on the regular printer (not the fax) and select Set as Default Printer.
Step 2: Select Correct Printer When Printing
- When printing a document, make sure to choose the correct printer from the Print dialog box.
- Avoid selecting the one labeled “Fax.”
Step 3: Remove Fax Printer (Optional)
If you don’t use fax at all:
- Go to Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the fax version of your printer and choose Remove device.
Step 4: Update Printer Drivers
Sometimes outdated drivers can cause confusion between print and fax functions.
- Visit the HP support site: Official HP® Support
- Enter your printer model and download the latest Full Feature Software and Drivers.
