Hi @Lochanora1,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are trying to connect your HP LaserJet M28 printer to WiFi on a Virgin Media Hub 5, follow these steps:
Prepare the Printer for Connection:
- Ensure the printer is turned on and in a ready state.
- Restore the printer's network settings to default. On your printer, press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel button for three seconds until the Wireless light blinks.
Connect the Printer to WiFi:
- Open the HP Smart app on your computer. If you don't have it installed, download and install it from the HP Smart website.
- In the HP Smart app, click on the "+" sign to add a new printer.
- Select "Set up a new printer".
- The app will search for printers. Once it finds your HP LaserJet M28, follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to your WiFi network. You will need your WiFi network name (SSID) and password.
Verify Printer Connection:
- Once the setup is complete, print a Network Configuration Report to ensure the printer is connected to the correct network. You can do this by pressing and holding the Resume button (the button with the green LED) on the printer for 10 seconds.
Update Printer Firmware (if necessary): Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Open the HP Smart app, go to the "Printer Settings", and check for any available firmware updates. Installing the latest firmware can resolve many connectivity issues.
Check Virgin Media Hub Settings:
- Ensure the 2.4GHz band is enabled on your Virgin Media Hub, as many printers do not support the 5GHz band.
- Ensure there are no restrictions on the network, such as MAC address filtering, that could prevent the printer from connecting.
Restart Devices:
- Restart your printer, computer, and Virgin Media Hub to ensure all devices are refreshed and any temporary network issues are resolved.
If you continue to have issues, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:
- Check Signal Strength: Ensure the printer is within range of your Virgin Media Hub and there are no significant obstacles (e.g., walls, electronic devices) causing interference.
- Re-enter WiFi Credentials: Double-check that the correct WiFi network name and password are entered during the setup process.
- Reset Printer Network Settings: If the printer still won't connect, repeat the process of restoring the network settings to default and reattempt the setup.
- Use HP Print and Scan Doctor: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to diagnose and resolve any network issues. HP Print and Scan Doctor

Many thanks for a very detailed response.
Shortly after I posted my appeal for help I saw a tip to contact the printer manufacturer and download the software again. I am pleased to say this worked for both my HP and my Canon printers.
Again many thanks for your help.
