Hi @budgie4,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer's connectivity!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Network Settings:

  • Ensure that the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
  • Verify the Wi-Fi signal strength where the printer is placed; weak signals can lead to disconnections. Consider moving the printer closer to the router if necessary.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure the printer firmware is up-to-date as updates can improve connectivity issues. Visit the HP Support website for any available firmware updates specific to your model.

Check Router Settings:

  • Ensure your router has the capability to handle multiple devices without dropping connections.
  • Verify that the printer is not being blocked by any network settings such as MAC filtering.

Static IP Address:

  • Assigning a static IP address to your printer can prevent connectivity drops, as it ensures the printer maintains the same address on the network.

Network Diagnostic Tool:

  • Use the built-in network diagnostic tool available in the printer settings to check for network issues.

Reset Network Settings:

  • Reset the printer’s network settings and try reconnecting. This can help resolve any configuration issues that might be present.

I hope this helps.

Hi @budgie4,

Thank you for the response.

Let’s build on what you found out about your Norton VPN and your printer dropping offline. Here’s what you can do step by step to fix this long term:

Add a Local Network Exception in Norton VPN

Most VPNs, including Norton’s, can be set to allow local network traffic so your PC can see the printer without turning the VPN off every time.

How to do it:

Open Norton 360 or your Norton app.

Go to Settings → Firewall → Networking.

Look for Trust Control or Network Security Map.

Find your printer’s IP address (print a network report from the printer).

Mark your printer’s IP as “Trusted” or “Allow local network sharing.”

Also check your VPN settings: some Norton VPN versions have an option like “Allow local network devices” , enable it.

If you don’t see it, visit Norton’s official help: Norton Smart Firewall Settings or contact them and ask how to allow LAN traffic with VPN on.

Reserve a Static IP for Your Printer

This prevents your router from changing your printer’s IP, which can confuse your computer (especially with VPNs involved).

How to do it:

Log in to your router’s settings (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x in a web browser).

Look for LAN → DHCP Reservation or Static IP.

Add your printer’s MAC address (found on a network configuration page) and assign it the same IP it has now.

Save & reboot your router + printer.

Add Printer by IP on Your Computer

When your printer has a static IP, add it by IP to your computer:

Windows:

Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Printers & Scanners → Add a Printer → The printer I want isn’t listed → Add by TCP/IP.

Enter the static IP.

Mac:

System Settings → Printers & Scanners → + → IP → Enter static IP.

Keep Printer & PC on the Same Wi-Fi Band

Some routers have both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.

Make sure the printer and computer are on the same band (2.4GHz is more stable for printers).

Test with VPN On

Turn the VPN back on.

Try printing, if you set the LAN exception and static IP correctly, it should now stay online.

I hope this helps.
