HP Support confirms the half-baked workaround: Scan the document (of course duplex scanning not supported...), take it to a computer, and print it double-sided. A one-minute job becomes ten minutes. Now you have a 2nd generation copy rather than a first gen. And for good measure, a few other nuances.
(2) Connect by wireless- simple, HPSmart app. Connect by Ethernet? It took HP Tech support over 90 minutes to do it over the phone while connected to my laptop. And even then...
(3) The printer goes to sleep after what, maybe 10 minutes of inactivity. Go to an app like Word or Powerpoint, select PRINT for the 7301, it reports "Printer Not Ready". But guess what? It really is ready, just select "print" and it wakes the computer up and prints. NO OTHER PRINTER I'VE EVER HAD DOES THIS. All other reasonable printers will say something like "IDLE".
(4) Want to make N>1copies- press the copy button N times. But wait, I pressed it too many times- oops, no way to count down. Shut the printer off and on. Very convenient.
(5) Try to cancel a document in the middle of printing? Good luck, at least in Windows 11. Control Panel- Devices and Printers- HP7301- Cancel all? Sounds reasonable, except the screen keeps a spinning symbol spinning...and spinning... and <yawn> spinning...etc. Walk over to the printer, press the cancel button "X", turn the printer on/off. When you you go to print another document, Word or Powerpoint tells you it's "not ready, 1 document waiting" just to confuse you. It really is ready.
I'm sure there will be more "features". Fortunately, I have until Jan 31 to return it to Amazon. Next time I'll get one with an LCD touch screen.
