I was recently given a printer and had connected it to my macbook via the hp app. however it was not allowing me to wirelessly print and would have me connect to the printer as a hotspot. i called and explained which then was told there was nothing i could do. now why did i ask chatgpt and was given the simple solution of turning off wireless direct. im not sure what is going on with the hp support but maybe having more knowledgeable people could be helpful.

Hi @3taylorm,

Thank you for sharing your experience, and I understand how frustrating that situation must have felt.
I’m glad to hear you were able to get your OfficeJet Pro 8600 working properly after turning off Wireless Direct — that is indeed the correct solution for enabling regular Wi-Fi printing through your network instead of connecting to the printer’s hotspot.

Just to clarify for future use, here’s how you can manage this setting on the printer:

a. Turn Off Wireless Direct (Hotspot Mode)

On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Setup (wrench icon).

Select Wireless Direct.

Choose Off.

b. Connect the Printer to Your Wi-Fi Network Instead

Go back to Setup → Wireless → Wireless Setup Wizard.

Select your Wi-Fi network name.

Enter the password and connect.

Once connected, the blue wireless light on the printer will remain solid.

c. Re-add the Printer on Your Mac

Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners.

Click the + symbol and select your printer from the network list.

Make sure it does not say “Direct-xx-HP-OfficeJet 8600,” but shows as a normal Wi-Fi printer.
