I have a HP ColorLaserJet MFP M283 fdw that I cannot get to map to the hp Smart app. The printer works fine but when I launch the app the printer says online but when I click on the icon it tells me it cannot find the printer? anyone else run into this issue and if yes how did you get it resolved?

Hi @TCM1770,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you are experiencing with your HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw not mapping to the HP Smart app, while still being able to print, is likely due to connectivity or software communication issues. Here's a step-by-step troubleshooting guide.
Verify Network Connection
- Ensure the printer and the device running the HP Smart app (PC, smartphone, or tablet) are on the same network.
- If using Wi-Fi, confirm the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your device.
- If using an Ethernet connection, ensure the network cable is securely connected to both the printer and the router.
Check for App Updates
- Ensure you are using the latest version of the HP Smart app. Check your app store (Google Play, Apple App Store, or Microsoft Store) for updates.
Restart Devices
- Restart the printer, the device running the HP Smart app, and your router. Power cycling often resolves temporary connectivity issues.
Re-add the Printer in the HP Smart App
- Open the HP Smart app and remove the printer if it is already added.
- Click on the + Add Printer button and follow the on-screen instructions to re-add it.
Check for Firewall or Security Software Conflicts
- Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software on your device, as these may block the HP Smart app from communicating with the printer.
Use the Printer's IP Address
- Open the printer's settings panel and locate its IP address (you can usually find it on the printer's control panel under Network Settings or Wi-Fi Settings).
- In the HP Smart app, instead of auto-detecting the printer, manually add it by entering the IP address.
Check Printer Firmware
- Update the printer's firmware to the latest version. You can do this directly from the printer's settings menu or by downloading updates from the HP website.
Clear HP Smart App Cache (If Applicable)
- On mobile devices, clear the cache and data of the HP Smart app via the app settings. Reopen the app and try again.

Alternative Scanning Methods
- If the issue persists, try scanning via a different method:
- Webscan: Open a browser, enter the printer's IP address, and use the Webscan feature under Scan settings.
- Windows Fax and Scan or Preview on macOS.
Uninstall and Reinstall HP Smart App
- Uninstall the HP Smart app completely from your device.
- Download and reinstall the app, then try reconnecting to the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
