Hi @duncantaylor,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like there may be an issue with the HP Smart app or the driver for your HP LaserJet M234 printer. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this.
Update Windows and Drivers
- Check for Windows updates: Make sure your Windows is up to date by going to Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates.
- Install the printer driver manually:
- Visit the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads website.
- Enter "HP LaserJet M234" in the search field, and choose the exact model.
- Download and install the latest printer drivers for Windows.
Reinstall HP Smart
- Uninstall HP Smart: Go to Settings > Apps > HP Smart and click Uninstall.
- Reinstall HP Smart from the Microsoft Store or HP’s website.
Install Printer via Control Panel
- Manually add the printer:
- Press Windows + R and type control printers, then hit Enter.
- Click Add a printer and let Windows search for the device.
- If Windows doesn't find the printer, choose The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname and follow the steps.
- Enter your printer’s IP address (can be found on the printer display or its network settings).
- Once done, Windows should install a generic driver for the printer.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to diagnose and fix any printer connectivity issues automatically.
Reset the Printer
- Factory reset the printer:
- Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cable, and wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn the printer back on.
- Reset any network settings (if applicable) via the printer control panel.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
