Hi @bmwcisel

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A flashing purple light on an HP Envy 6400 series printer typically indicates an issue with the printer, such as a paper jam, low ink, or a problem with the printer’s hardware or connection. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you resolve the issue:

1. Check for Paper Jams

A paper jam or an obstruction in the printer’s paper path can cause the flashing purple light.

  • Inspect the Paper Path: Open the printer's cover and check for any jammed paper inside the printer, especially in the paper tray and the area where the paper is fed through.
  • Remove Jammed Paper: If you find any paper stuck, gently remove it, making sure not to tear it.
  • Check the Rear Access Panel: Some HP printers have a rear panel that you can open to clear paper jams. Check there as well.

2. Check Ink Cartridges

Sometimes, a flashing purple light can be due to an issue with the ink cartridges.

  • Open the Ink Cartridge Access Door: Check if the ink cartridges are properly installed and not loose.
  • Check for Low or Empty Ink: If the ink cartridges are low or empty, replace them with new ones.
  • Reinstall Cartridges: Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges to ensure they are seated properly.
  • Check for Protective Tape: If the printer is new, ensure that any protective tape on the ink cartridges has been removed.

3. Check for Connectivity Issues

If your printer is connected via Wi-Fi or USB, it’s important to ensure there are no connectivity issues.

  • Wi-Fi Connection: If your printer is connected to Wi-Fi, make sure the printer is on the correct network and has an active connection. You can check this on the printer's display or the HP Smart app.
  • USB Cable: If you're using a USB connection, ensure the cable is securely connected to both the printer and the computer. Try using a different USB port or cable if necessary.

4. Restart the Printer

A simple restart can often resolve flashing light issues.

  • Turn off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer. Wait for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Turn on the Printer: Press the power button again to turn the printer back on and check if the purple light stops flashing.

5. Check for Printer Errors

If the printer displays a specific error message on the screen (or if your printer has a screen), note the error code or message. You can then refer to the printer’s manual or look up the error online for more specific troubleshooting.

6. Perform a Printer Reset

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, performing a reset on the printer might help.

  • Hard Reset:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Unplug the printer from the power outlet.
    3. Wait for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
    4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

7. Update Printer Drivers and Firmware

Outdated printer drivers or firmware can sometimes cause issues, including flashing lights.

  • Update Drivers: Ensure you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. You can download the latest drivers from the HP support website.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer by visiting the HP website or using the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
