Hello @MS620, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw is asking for a Wi-Fi password, here’s how to figure out what password it's requesting and how to proceed:
Is the printer asking for your Wi-Fi network password?
If the printer is trying to connect to your wireless router, then it’s asking for your Wi-Fi password (also called the network security key or WPA/WPA2 password). This is not related to the printer—it’s the password you use to connect any device (like a phone or laptop) to your Wi-Fi.
Check:
- The label on your router (usually under it) — look for WPA2 key, Wi-Fi password, or SSID Password.
- Or check your router settings via browser if the label is missing.
Is the printer creating its own Wi-Fi (e.g. for Wi-Fi Direct)?
If you are trying to connect a phone or PC directly to the printer’s Wi-Fi (using Wi-Fi Direct), the printer will broadcast its own network like:
DIRECT-xx-HP M281fdw
Then the printer will ask for a Wi-Fi Direct password, usually printed on:
The printer control panel under Settings > Network Setup > Wi-Fi Direct Settings
Or on a Network Configuration Page (you can print it from the printer settings)
Default Wi-Fi Direct password is often:
12345678
Is it asking for the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) password?
If you’re accessing the printer via its IP address in a browser (like 192.168.1.x) and it asks for a login/password, try:
- Username: admin
- Password: (try blank) or admin, or the PIN found on the printer label (usually on the back or inside the cartridge door).
If you still can't connect
You can reset the network settings:
Steps:
- On the printer touchscreen, go to Network Settings > Restore Network Settings.
- Restart the printer.
- Use the HP Smart app or WPS push-button method to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
