Welcome to the HP Community --

There is not much information to go on --

Two different unknown printers that cannot stay connected might be less about the simple wireless radio hardware in the printer and more about what else is preventing the connection from working as expected.

We can provide the tools you need to figure out what is going on and to correct any issues.

Start

In general, wireless capable printers have wireless radios installed as part of the printer hardware.

That said, the wireless radio is completely dependent on your network - how the network is configured, the distance to the router, how the printer is connected to that network.

There are different types of connections --

  • A standard Wireless connection in your home (office) network connects the printer to other devices on that network.
  • Wireless connection speeds are important -- For example, there are a few printer models that support Wireless but only on the 2.4GHz frequency.  Many routers support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz but need to be configured to do so.
  • Web Services -- if the printer supports such -- connects the printer to the Internet.  For example -- The printer must be connected to the Internet to support remote printing and certain services (e.g. Instant Ink).
  • Wi-Fi Direct is a Wireless connection that uses the printer's onboard wireless radio to connect to your wireless capable device (computer, tablet, phone).
  • USB -- sometimes it's a good alternative to trying to use a Wireless or Wired network.  For example, if your network is old, unstable, not fully configured, or if the distance between printer and any other device is too great to support Wireless of any type, USB can provide a means to at least print and scan locally.  Printers that support a full driver printer software can be used with only a USB connection.

There are other factors, of course -- The list simply illustrates the point that the printer wireless radio does not make and keep the connection just because the printer is turned on.

The goals --

  • Understand how your printer works -- what it can do and the type of connection(s) it supports
  • Understand a bit about your network
  • Determine where the source of the issue is located
  • Correct the problem as best can be done given the tools available

Where to find the information you need --

Read as much or as little as it takes to become familiar with your situation and how to move forward.

For example, if you are not using Wi-Fi Direct, it might still be useful to know what it is so you can try it if other connection methods fail.

Quite a bit of information can usually be found in the printer's user manual -- the guide explains what is possible, including the types of connections the printer supports (USB, Wireless, Wired - Ethernet, Wi-Fi Direct).
