HP Officejet 8022 is stuck at "Checking the printer. Please wait..."

Because it's stuck, the cartridge carrier won't move when I open it.

I've searched everywhere on HP's "support" web pages -- can't find any help there.

I've unplugged it and plugged it back in... same problem over and over.
