Linux mint with wireless connection to router about 70 ft away , cannot get Hp 2755e wireless to work. Printer is connected to computer. Can't seem to figure out how to get printer visible on local network. Can I not get printer on network through comoputer?

It sounds like you're having trouble getting your HP 2755e printer visible on the network from your Linux Mint system, even though it's connected to your computer. There are a few things you can try to resolve the issue.

 

Check Printer's Wireless Setup:

  • Make sure your printer is correctly connected to your Wi-Fi network. This may require checking the printer's display or settings to confirm it's connected to the correct network.
  • If needed, you can use the printer's built-in display to connect it to the network manually, or use the HP Smart app to complete the setup.

Check Network Visibility:

  • Ensure your printer and computer are on the same network. Sometimes printers can get connected to a guest network or a different frequency (2.4GHz vs. 5GHz), which can cause visibility issues.

Install Printer Drivers and Configuration on Linux:

  • Make sure the necessary drivers are installed on your Linux system. You can install the HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) drivers for better compatibility. To install HPLIP:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install hplip
 

  • After installation, run the hp-setup utility:

sudo hp-setup

 

  • This will help you find the printer on the network and set it up for printing.

Access the Printer Directly via IP:

  • If the printer is connected to your network, you can attempt to add it manually by entering the printer's IP address in your Linux Mint system's printer settings.
    1. Find your printer's IP by printing a network configuration page (usually accessible from the printer's menu).
    2. Go to System Settings > Printers > Add Printer.
    3. Select Network Printer and enter the IP address.

Firewall or Router Settings:

  • Ensure that your firewall or router isn’t blocking the printer’s connection. Sometimes router security features (like isolation or certain firewalls) may prevent devices on the network from communicating with each other. Check your router’s settings to ensure it allows local network communication.

Use Printer through Computer Connection:

  • If you have the printer directly connected to your computer, you can print to it via USB, and share it on the network by configuring the printer sharing settings. However, this method can be a bit more complex on Linux, so it's generally better to connect the printer directly to the network.

Well, I guess for one thing the printer must be too far from  the router. But the previous setup was almost identical, except then I had the computer connected via ehternet. Now in the new location i have an external wifi card with extended range as I do not want to run ethernet in this new townhouse.

I am completly beat by this so will just give up. Can't get wifi direct to work. HP app still has this printer listed from the original setup in old place, just says it is not available. Only thing I have not tried is to install HPLIP. Am running printer on Turboprint and also have it on Linux drives ie. two prunters are shown in linux print, both print locally OK

I could not add this new printer queue to HP Smart either

I can't believe this can be that difficult as I had no problem in the previous almost identical setup

Turns out printer was too far from router to set up wirelessly. Moved it nearer the router and setup completed. Rerurned printer to final location far away from router, prints OK wirelessly

Thanks for one of the most complete replies I have seen in a long time. I could not get any of the suggestions to work, but I suspect  that is my fault in not understanding instructions
