Hi @fransown

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation—it’s understandably frustrating when a direct cable connection still doesn’t allow the printer to function properly.

Let’s walk through a few steps to help resolve this issue with your HP DeskJet 4255e on Windows 11.

1. Remove and Reinstall the Printer Driver

A clean reinstall can often clear up connection errors:

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Select your HP DeskJet 4255e and click Remove.
  • Disconnect the USB cable.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Reconnect the USB cable and wait for Windows to detect the printer.

If it doesn’t install automatically, download the full driver package from the HP DeskJet 4255e support page.

2. Run HP’s USB Connection Troubleshooter

HP provides a dedicated tool to help resolve USB-related issues:

  • Visit the HP Printer Diagnostics page.
  • Scroll to Tools & Diagnostics and select Troubleshoot a USB connection to an HP printer.
  • Follow the guided steps to identify and fix any USB communication problems.

3. Check USB Port and Cable Integrity

Sometimes the issue lies with the physical connection:

  • Try a different USB port on your computer.
  • Use a different USB cable if available—preferably one rated for data transfer.
  • Avoid using USB hubs or extension adapters during setup.

4. Verify Windows Printer Settings

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Click on your printer and select Manage.
  • Try printing a test page. If it fails, click Printer Properties > Ports and ensure the correct USB port is selected.

5. Update Windows and Printer Firmware

Outdated system files or firmware can cause compatibility issues:

  • Check for Windows updates via Settings > Windows Update.
  • Visit the HP DeskJet 4255e driver page and install any available Firmware updates.

Let me know how far you get with these steps. If the error persists, we’ll dig deeper into system logs or explore alternate setup paths.

You're doing the right thing by tackling this head-on.
