Welcome to the HP English Community --

The reason could be one or more of several reasons, including and not limited to one or more of the following:

  • The printer might not support automatic 2-sided printing
  • The paper size and / or paper type do not support 2-sided printing
  • Related at least to Windows > The Duplex option is not "installed"
  • The printer is not aware of the paper size / type setting - Printer Panel or EWS (Embedded Web Server)
  • The printer and the print job setup are not in agreement about the paper size / type or job configuration
  • "Life Technologies" (Windows) might be set to ON (and needs to be OFF)

Tutorial shows how to print a 2-sided document on the DeskJet printer.

This is a manual workaround as the printer does not support automatic 2-sided printing.

Duplex unit attached to the printer? (Model Dependent)

If there is a Duplexer unit attached to the back of the printer, consider re-seating (removing/replacing) the Duplexer box. If you do remove the duplexer, take a moment to check inside the printer cavity for tiny stuck paper bits – while stuck paper would normally result in a “paper jam” error, the condition might generate problems with printing duplex.
