I am trying to do away with wireless connections and so have unplugged my router and connected my printer directly to my computer via a usb cable. On trying to print I get the message “please connect printer to HP Connected” in order to check the ink status; however, on clicking OK it will print. On the same note I am unable to check the ink status using HP Utility, instead I get the message “unable to communicate with the selected device”.

I don’t get it: the computer is connected to the internet via an ethernet cable, so shouldn't the printer be able to access HP Connected thru the computer? And why do I have to go online to check the ink status?

Welcome to the HP support community.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.
