I came to print something yesterday and nothing happened (having earlier printed a page). Looked at printer - cartridge light blinking. Used HP Printer Doctor, opened cover and carriage moved to tricolour cartridge so took it out and in again. No difference. Then took out and in the black cartridge and carraiage moved to there! Repeated this several times to no effects. Never had this problem before and I have no spare cartridges at the moment. I'm stuck for a solution!
Thanks

Hi,
For some unknown reason it started working again after just checked to make sure the USB lead was plugged firmly into the printer (it was).
Regarding the surge protector, I have always used one and I didn't reven think about that (not that I need to now but I'll bear in mind of course). I used the guide you mentioned to troubleshoot not that it helped when I used the guide before it started working again after checking the USB connection. I had intended to purchase a new printer as I've had this one since around 2002 so I wasn't keen to buy new cartridges that might not still work. I don't need a two in one as I have a flatbed scanner and I like the look of the HP OfficeJet 8100 ePrinter.
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate that.

Hey @materialman,
I see that you are having some issues with a blinking light on your printer. I can help you with that.
To start make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector. Once that is done this document outlines the different lights on the printer and will have some ideas on how to troubleshoot them. Eventually though you may need to purchase some other cartridges to determine if you are having some issues with the cartridge.
I hope this helps and I hope you have a great week!
