The printer is setup using DHCP, I have a fair number of devices, from computers, phones, servers, etc.

All the other devices work like a champ.

The diagnostic tool showed that my PC connects fine with the printer and scanner.

The issue I am having is that the webservices on the printer don't appear to be working properly. For example, when I go to the Web Services tab in the web interface, it shows not connected. Clicking the "Fix THis" link does nothing.

Or when I "Check server for update" it says unable to connect to server. Here are my IP settings (my computers show the same values for everything but the IP address)

Domain Name local.lan

Configured By DHCP IP Address 192.168.1.5

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway 192.168.1.1

DNSv4   Configured By DHCP

Preferred DNS Address 192.168.1.1

Alternate DNS Address 71.250.0.12

WINS   Configured By DHCP

Primary WINS Server 0.0.0.0

Secondary WINS Server 0.0.0.0

Hope you are doing well ScottChapman;

Thank you for the detail of the configuration

I see let's try to update the firmware of the printer if there is one avialable to check to here,

This is the main support page for your printer,

HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g  Make sure that this is your printer the last letter on is important.

Go to software and drivers download and select your operating system.  Upgrade the firmware of the printer.

if this fixes the problem Great please let me know,

if not let try the following

Can you add some other information,

What operating system (s)

What is your router's made and model?

As you may know the problem with having devices like servers or printers with assined IP addresses by DHCP this may change due to lease ending and being assign to another computer (node) and in some occasions firewalls and some other security devices or application, can quarrentine or block the processes as well as other issues can ariase due to this, is common practice to assign static Ipaddresses to thesee to type of devices. Also it will help us isolate what the issue may be. Of course if you want and feel conforable doing this.

I will assume that some of this machines are running Windows 7

Type in the search bar or the run command line netcpa.cpl

Select the connection that you want to use for the changes.

Right click on the active connection and select Properties

now Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) then click the Properties button.

local area connection image.png

In the properties;

internet protocol version 4 properties.png

Here where it saids  preferred DNS Server, you can type,  the IP address of the google public DNS servers 8.8.8.8   and the alternate DNS serve as 8.8.4.4

To assign the static ip address to the printer is better to do this in the printer.

in the front panel of the printer go to, setup> network> advance setup> ipaddress set to manual and enter the static ip in the the same range of the router but if possible outside the DHCP range.

Another beneficial extra step, if possible

Then in the router configuration (if your router allows this) , Reserve the same IP address for the printer's MAC address. For intructions on how to do this or if the funcionality is available) please refer to the router's manufacturers documentation and website.

Hope this helps and letme know the outcome.

I am running 64-bit windows 7.

The printer is running latest firmware, and changing the DNS to use the google DNS servers had no effect.

the printer is attached to a managed switch and then to a actiontec router (supplied by Verizon for their FiOS network).

Like I said, everything else on my network works like a champ, and I can get to the printer just fine. The printer just cannot seem to get to the outside network...

Hi ScottChapman;

I see thanks for following the advise and sorry it did not help,

I will do some research to see if I can come up with a diferent aproach  attach the issue for  you,  in the meantime.

let's power reset the printer

Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
 If the issue persists

I am sure that you did assign the printer and static IP address, already so with that in mind. Let's try to make sure that this not the port in the switch, connectthe printer directly to the router if possible, try another ethernet cable. also this may be the fault.

Also make sure that the router firmware is current i know that the router is working fine with other devices but  it may be the issue.

Hope this helps!

well that's interesting. the power cycling appeared to fix it. THough I could have sworn that was one of the first troubleshooting tricks I tried...

I restore the DNS to DHCP, everything appears fine now. Very odd...

THanks!

I am having exactly the same problem as others here, having purchased my HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus yesterday.

Everything else works except for web services/ePrint. I am using a hard wired network and can use the embedded webserver OK but under Webservices it says "Canot connect to server". I can scan to computer, and use all other functions except ePrint. Also the printer cannot obtain updates ("Update could not be downloaded").

I am using Windows 7 Svc Pack 1 64 bit.

I do not use a proxy. Just a Netgear dsl router. Norton 2012 NIS firewall is on but switching off makes no difference.

I have assigned a static IP address to the printer - 192.168.2.244 but this does not help.

I have run the diagnostic utlity in this thread but it sees the network printer OK and does not report any errors.

Power cycling etc. also tried.

Any suggestions welcome.

Yea, mine started having problems again. So it appears to be some flakiness in the current firmware for the printer.

I haven't tried power cycling it to try to restore it, but I suspect that'll work. You just shouldn't have to keep doing that...

HP: Are you aware of this bug??

HP Recommended

Sorry I should also have said my printer already has the latest firmware, and I have Google DNS server addresses s set up.

No amount of power cycling does it for me as it is always an error showing up on startup.

It is fickle. Mostly doesn't work for me. Got it to work once, but no longer...
