I have cartridge security turned off as its been since I bought this machine. And the generic cartridges ahve been happily chugging along until tonight when it says "Indicated cartridges blocked for containing a non-HP chip" and my printer won't print. Can someone tell me how to kill this and let me print. I really need to print now, not tomorrow

The tip is to use usb instead of wifi to downgrade the firmware:

Search for "HP Supply Problem after Update" and "HP being Shifty"
I can't put a link in cos that would be blocked. but here's my working printer after using it
(thanks hubby! for keeping on looking after I'd given up in despair)

I have the exact same problem.... and I've noticed it's on the exact same date! This leads me to believe that this was an updated that HP did to block aftermarket cartridges being used. I've been using the aftermarket cartridges for about a year, and yesterday (30th November 2021) it just blocked ALL printing! (I have 1 aftermarket cartridge and 3 genuine HP cartridges in the printer). I've always bought HP printers... but will never buy them again after this.

Hi @LeeAtChelmer,
I'd like to help!
I understand you are facing a toner error.
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

@Jay_G24
I've tried updating the firmware, but still the same issue.
My printer is fitted with 3 genuine HP cartridges and 1 third-party cartridge. I've been using this same cartridge for the past 4 months without any issues (until yesterday when it was blocked). I've tried replacing it with another (new) third-party cartridge and that one is also being blocked, so I can confirm that it is not the individual cartridge that is causing the issue.

NO! My cartridge was working perfectly well before HP forced an update. I have updates switched off and cartridge protection switched off and this was still forced on me.
Utterly deplorable actions by HP.
Words cannot describe how angry I am right now. You have denied me my paid for perfectly functioning printer and cartridge.

All of the things you suggest have been tried and failed in the last day or so. No, the cartridges are fine and working well till that moment for many months. No, it's not an issue with their manufacture. And the firmware etc are completely up-to-date. I phoned help for HP and they said it's "dynamic security" that would have come with the 9 November firmware update and (basically) tough luck.
So very unimpressed. Think ACCC would be interested in hearing about this anti-competitive behaviour?
