Hi dbrockmeyer,
What printer do you have?
What is the operating system on your computer?
How do you have the printer connected to your computer?
What fatal error code are you getting?

I am also seeing the "Fatal Installation Error", but after following SBlaylock's suggestion of disabling all non-MS services in MSConfig I was able to complete installation and conduct a test print/scan. However, after restoring all non-MS services & rebooting, the scanner is no longer detected.
Thinking that one of the non-MS services was conflicting, I disabled each one, rebooted, and checked if the scanner was detected. None seemed to have an effect. Even disabling all non-MS services again, then rebooting, still did not allow the scanner to be detected.
- M1536 model
- latest firmware was installed
- Windows 7 x32 Professional
- USB connection = I do not want to put this printer on the network for others to see, even if their access was disabled
- latest HP driver was installed
Please advise.

NChan-RXF,
I would recommend taking a look at the following document to troubleshoot your Fatal Error issue. I do not know the error number you received, or I would try to link to you the exact steps that you need to follow, but you should be able to find what you need in this document.
A 'Fatal Error' (MSI error) Displays on the Computer During HP Software Installation in Windows
Try those steps and let me know if they work for you!
Best of luck!

Hello Kyle,
Sorry, I should have mentioned before that I tried the Basic driver as well before but will go through the link you sent. Maybe there's something different in there. I will post back what happens.

Alright, just let me know if anything in there helps or not. If it doesn't let me know and I will look for alternate solutions for you.

Hello Kyle,
Thanks, your links provided a bit more insight. Installing the Basic driver failed. Despite the security risks, this link
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02885499
advised modifying access to C: for the [Users] group. Normally I would frown on that but for testing I gave [Users] <Full Control>. I was actually able to install the Full driver without having to disable all non-MS services.
However, I could not send a print page to the printer or have the Scan software launch as I saw the error "The HP LJ M1530 Series Scan was not found." I even granted [Users] group <Full Control> to C:\Program Files\HP\ to no avail.
Checking the Application event log yielded:
“hppFaxDrvM1530 -- Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action RunFaxDriverSetupx86, location: C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Fax\Fax Printer Drivers 0.6 Setup\, command: C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Fax\Fax Printer Drivers 0.6 Setup\hppfaxprintersetup_x86.exe”
Please advise.

By the way, I took an identical machine and connected it to a LaserJet 2035 printer. Windows 7 x32 detected & installed drivers for the new hardware with no input from me. I did not have to do any of the futile exercises I completed for the 1536nf scanner/printer, such as granting rights to the C: or disabling non-MS services.
If there is any additional information I can provide to correct the problem with the 1536nf, please let me know.

The following steps worked for me on 2 different Windows 7 x64 computers that had the Fatal Error with no error code. I informed HP level 3 tech support of my findings since they had no proposed solutions.
I did these steps with the Basic driver, but I suspect they will work with the Full Driver as well since both installers were giving me the same Fatal Error:
1) Double-click the setup file that you downloaded from HP to start the installer. (hp_M1530_MFP_Basic_usb_n_w.exe)
2) While the installer is open, go to C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Temp
3) Find the temporary installation folder and copy it to your desktop. Mine was called 7zS3F94.
4) Cancel or close out of the installer that you started in step 1.
5) Inside of the temporary installation folder that you copied to your desktop, run the following installer: Setup\Product\Scan_App\HPScanLJM1530.msi
6) The HPScanLJM1530.msi installer completes quickly and silently (i.e. no window pops up to confirm that it's done)
7) Now Run the Setup.exe file in the root of your temporary installation folder. The installer should now complete without the fatal error.
For HP's benefit:
I dug through the error messages related to the Fatal Error. The error occurs during the DriverPackagePreinstall stage, in my case hanging on a BadImageFormatException on hpmldmfax02.inf. I've seen other people with the same error on your forums, although it appears that different LaserJet products encounter the "incorrect format" error on varying inf files. I suspect you have some sort of problem with your architecture detection in you Driver Preload stage of execution.
