okay. I bought a hp printer today and ran into the same problem, googled it for a quick fix but ran into this thread instead so, i did some troubleshooting on my own and here is the SOLUTION that worked for me:
- if you use your router (gateway) as your dns server, it won't work
- go into manual setup for the network, make the dns server manul (not automatic) and input your ISP's dns servers (if you don't know your isp dns servers, check the 'information' section of your router (loginto it via browser), normally it would list it there)
by the way, I like this printer! its got a ton of features that are normally found in the big/expensive ones!
Wish list: (for any hp folks looking at this):
- fix the dns issue
- update the firmware to include scan to ftp instead of smb only (regular mac folks might be confused by all the weird hoops you have to go to get it to save)
- bluetooth printing
- automatic double side scanning (i know i know...)
Great product.

Finally a solution that worked. I can't believe it has been 10 months since I first posted this question. I did exactly as you said. I went to the status tab on my lynksys router configuration and in the Internet section there were two dns numbers. I went to the settings for the HP printer, made the dns manual and entered both numbers. I printed out a new configuration page and now see there is a difference from when I first posted the information requested in an earlier post.
Before
IP address 192.168.1.100
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1
primary dns server 192.168.1.1
After
IP address 192.168.1.100
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1
primary dns server 65.32.5.111
secondary dns server 65.32.5.112
Thank you so much for posting this solution. Now if I can only figure out how to keep it from skipping scanning pages on large documents, 8+ pages.

Hi All, I just read through this thread. I'm having the same problem but with an Ethernet connection.
I'm also on a Mac (Leopard) and I have the Apple Extreme Router as well.
What should I do to get the scan to email functioning?

Hey All,
I am connected with web to the printer but do not see the tab or setting for scan to email, From the printer also i did not find any settings. If i use scan button have choice only "scan to computer". I do not have any PC hooked UP to this.
Any help please.

I am using a time machine, which is also an airport extreme. Wired. I am showing the following:
IP Address: 10.0.1.8
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
Primary DNS Server: 10.0.1.1
Secondary: 0.0.0.0
I have been working at this for hours. I was able to get it to work wirelessly once. But I want the printer to be wired! What am missing?? Very frustrating.

I've spent over 20 hours trying to get things working, both on my own and with the help of tech support. Two things I learned on my own during the process.
1) If you are having issues with scan to email (can not connect) pull up the browser page, go to Networking, IPV4 config, enter the IP address from manual default gateway into the manual DNS server and hit "apply" twice. I'm using a DLINK router.
2) It looks as if to stop the problem of the printer going offline with XP; on the printer, select tools, preferences, energy mode and turn it off. The screen will continue to turn off but so far I haven't had an issue of the printer going offline.
I still haven't got the firewall in AVG 9 cooperating but I'm willing to live with that issue for now.

I had same problem. Left my IP addresses in automatic, switched DNS servers to manual and typed in DNS addresses from my Verizon FiOS router "system monitoring" page. Unlike others, I had no success using port 25 for SMTP, but followed some online advice to use port 587 instead - it worked. Left SSL box checked. Remember to use your full email login with the SMTP address section along with your email password.
Extremely frustrating getting this setup - make this topic a FAQ already!
But ... now that it works ... it's magic ... 🙂
