Hi...

I have started experiencing the notorious "scan to computer not working" issue on my 1-month OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, after having used the feature a number of times flawlessly.

There are a lot of potential solutions mentioned in dozens of relevant posts for both Mac and Windows, e.g.:

  1. "Failed to open a session on the device"...
  2. Scan to computer does not work...
  3. Problem scanning to computer with an 8600 wireless
  4. Unable to enable print to computer...
  5. Enable Scan to Computer - Communication Error
  6. Officejet Pro 8600 Utility does not show my Mac computer in scan settings
  7. A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning
  8. HP Wireless All-in-One Printers - Communication Error between the Scanner and Your Computer...
  9. Etc.

However, in my case, no solution works, after several frustrating hours of trying to fix the issue, in Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), or after upgrading to Maverics (10.9).

The behavior of the device points to a software issue, since:

  • The printer is visible on the network
  • The print function has been working fine
  • The HP Scan function works
  • The generic Scan function from System Preferences works (although in earlier times it did not, or it stopped working soon after invoking it)
  • The "Scan to Computer" option does not appear in the HP Utility screen (although occasionally, after random sequences of unistalling and installing the software, it reappears)
  • The HP Installer crashes before completing the installation (this is a latest symptom, apparently happening before unvoking the HP Setup Assistant, which still works fine)

As already mentioned, I have tried all possible solutions, including software and firmware updates, Apple drivers, HP drivers (full featured software), clean (un)installations, followed by computer and printer restarts. Nothing seems to work.

The "Scan to Computer" feature of the 8600 always works on my Windows 7 laptop, after initial configuration.

The next step will be returning the device for a refund, but before resorting to that, I am giving it a last chance, in (the unlikely) case there is something new I have not tried yet.

Thanks,

PNS

Just to re-iterate, the issue is not specific to Maverics and none of the suggested solutions seem to work for my setup.

Hi PNS,

I understand the issue is not specific to Mavericks, but you have upgraded from 10.8 to the new Mavericks is that correct? If I do understand correctly, you no longer have 10.8, you now have the Mac with 10.9 and a Windows PC with Windows 7 right?

I can't troubleshoot the 10.8 if you no longer are using it.

At this time there is no HP full feature software and driver available for Mavericks and therefor you will not have the capability to scan from the front panel of the printer. The firmware in the printer communicates with the software this is why as you stated "The "Scan to Computer" feature of the 8600 always works on my Windows 7 laptop, after initial configuration."

My suggestion, in my previous post, to view the Mavericks thread was so you could see alternate scan options.

Yes, I have upgraded to 10.9 (Maverics), after losing all these countless hours trying to fix the scan issue in 10.8, which is still not resolved in 10.8 anyway.

It is definitely not a MacOS version issue but an HP software issue in the MacOS, which does not seem related to the firmware. Most probably some network I/O error.

Anyway, I can wait a few more days and afterwards the only option left is to just return the device. This has been going on for too long and it is not acceptable.

Thanks for all the effort to help.

I am running Mac OS X 8.5 on an iMac 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5, with 8GB of RAM. I have downloaded and installed all currently available software for my HP 8600 Plus as of 10/31/2013, including the firmware update made available. I have the HP Utility Version 5.19.2.. The scan to computer function does not work for me. I have restarted my computer, emptied font caches, shutdown the 8600 printer and rebooted both systems in order (computer then printer, printer then computer) and it fails on the scan to computer feature every time.

The link provided in the above dialogue box sends me back to the same page to enter in my computer's OS info and download the same software that I have already installed. What is the fix for this and ETA? Thanks - FacMan

I am linking you to an HP Support document titled “Uninstalling the Printer Software” below. I am also providing you the link to the HP software for your printer titled “HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software and Driver - Mac OS X 10.6, OS X 10.7, OS X 10.8” below as well.

Follow the first document and uninstall the software. Reboot the computer than download and install the linked software. This should resolve your issue.

I've had an officejet pro 8600 plus for around a year now and on and off had connection problems for both printing and scanning.  For a while restarting our modem solved the issue.  However I got frustrated with that so ended up re-setting the printer back to factory settings and then setting it up with a fixed IP address.  This seems to have solved the printing problem.  However I cannot use the scan to computer option at all.  It doesn't find any computers.  When I first changed this set up I enabled scan to computer in the printer settings online.  However that setting has now completely disappeared.  I wonder if HP has decided to remove it?  Very frustrating!  I have now set up scan to email and that seems to be working well instead.  What is still not working for me is the airprint facility which used to work but no longer does - my iphone cannot find the printer, unless I choose to change my wifi to the printer which is of course a right pain to have to do everytime you want to print something.

I have had the same problem for the whole evening. I restarted, downloaded new firmware aso. Nothing helped.

The computer/Mac said no connection with the printer/scanner., and that they couldn't communicate when I was trying to use the scanner, when I tryed to click the "scanning to computer"  in the HPprogram on the computer.

Then I just clicked on the button  scanningtasks, and then it worked. It seems to be a bug there, because I have to do that every time.
