This is actually an interesting hidden menu. It seems to have a variety of indicators in here as well as some diagnostic tools. I haven't fiddled with much in there lest I break something, but it may be my next stop if this keeps happening. I've now taken it off the surge protector and have it directly in the wall socket so we'll see if that makes a difference.
One thing I wonder though: I know my house has somewhat "dirty" power, and with the talk of surge protectors causing issues with these printers, are they just really sensitive to voltage fluctuations?
I also use the WiFi exclusively, so the fault here could also be in the wireless. The hidden menu has a capability of generating a Wireless Diagnostic report, which I think is going to be the next troubleshooting step.

djvanyel, this printer shouldn't be particularly susceptible to voltage fluctuations. We test our printers for a wide variety of powerline conditions, including everything from coupling from AM radio transmitters to switching noise from big motors to lightning surge, and we don't send them out to the market unless they pass. This is part of the professional discipline kown as Electromagnetic Compatibility, and I'm one of HPs' lead Engineers in that field.
I also saw the earlier comments about power strips and, like others, I found it surprising. That's why I was so interested in knowing more details if the power strip really did turn out to be the issue. I wrote last week to the product team that tested this particular printer model to ask if they had any unusual results during its powerline noise tests and it all looked normal. So at this time, I'm not seeing evidence of power fluctuation as the root of this issue.
(I work for HP, but I don't speak for Hewlett or Packard when I post here.)

That's it... I've exhausted every idea they have.
Nothing fixes it other than leaving it off until I need it then turning it back off after I've finished printing.
Great.
Now I ask for service cause I can't keep a printer that works this way.
Edited: well, just off chat. This time I learned there was a method to upgrade the firmware!
Here is how: enter you printer's IP Address into browser. Click Web Services tab.. then on the left, Product Update.
He also suggested I first enter the printer's static IP Address within the Network tab and on the left IPv4 Configuration.
So these two changes and he tells me that should fix it. Fingers are crossed, again. I'll know in a little while.

One hour later... error returns. There doesn't seem to be anything that can fix this.
😞
Another call to support. This time we look at the router. I was asked to switch the wireless channgel from 'autoscan' to channel 11.

I've posted FIX before so I wanted to be really sure before saying this again. Indeed, I found the fix.
Here is what was required:
In your wireless router configuration, switch the wireless channel from 'autoscan' to channel 11.
I'm now going to try and forget all the worry this has caused and remove my bookmark for this website. Yippeee!
tip: Before you reboot your printer from this error, leave it unplugged for a minute.
With patience you may also resolve this. I hope so.
EDIT: NOT FIXED : I am not going to keep making more entries on this site, I'll just keep editing this one.
4 June 2013 - call to Support, now I'm aske to move the printer to a new location in my home. It seems there may have been too much interferrance. So I've moved it far from where it was. I"ll know in a day or two I guess.
5 June 2013 - I am being sent a replacement printer. Bought this one in Janurary. Five months of trying to resolve. Hopefully the replacement will do it. Should.
21 June 2013 - EDIT: FIXED!!! REALLY FIXED see my post on page 5 of this forum for the resolution. Yippeee

I am having the same problem with my HP Officejet 4620. When I go to support it says it cannot find the printer for "English Canada", which I am from(Listowel, Ontario, Canada). My printer says, "Turn power off, t", but the power button does not work, it just keeps flashing. I unplugged it for a whole day, but as soon as I plugged it back in it went back to the same error message.
I cannot reach HP support because it thinks my printer does not exist for Canada! You call this support? I have had it too long to take it back to the store. I had a problem with the last HP printer I bought, it kept saying "there is a problem with your ink cartridge". I kept replacing both cartridges becauses it wouldn't tell which cartridge and this got very expensive. Turns out it was a hardware issue and I had to replace the printer just out of warranty.
I agree with the previous posters. I have always been an HP user but after this, I will not buy another HP product. I need this one fixed...

I've experienced identical problem a dozen times since opening the box of my new Officeject 4620 printer yesterday.
Having read all previous comments and tried re-plugging it to no avail ( I am plugged directly into UK 240v mains) I think i've now concluded the Wifi is the real issue causing the lock up.
My wifi settings were originally set up as per HP instructions using USB then unplugging it . Something clearly is not copied across at this stage .
so ....
Press Wifi button, select option to re-set wifi to factory settings. Then re-boot printer with main 'on/off' button.
When re-started next press wifi button again. No wifi connection will show up ( obviously !) . From the menu find the option to re-install a wifi connection using the WPS button. This gives you a 2 minute countdown on the screen for you to go to your router and press the WPS on the router (I'm using a BT Homehub 4 on Infinity BB , but most modern routers have a WPS button somewhere) . Countdown on the printer continued for about another 30 seconds , then ( just when I thought nothing was happening) the printer screen confirmed it was connected. Exit to home screen. Printer should be fine now .
So far I have printed over wifi from W7, Mac, iPhone. All ok and printer appears stable once more.
Printer has since been re-booted several times ( just to test) and so far continues to be stable after re-starts.
I hope this helps someone out.
