Nothing has changed for me and I have tried all the suggestions--except replace the printer.  For sure, I'll consider that !

I wonder if any HP "ex-employee" who wont be afraid to loose his job by telling the truth could shed some light on this problem

I uninstalled the printer from my PC.  I made sure the driver was removed as well.  Deleted any HP folders and made sure any trace was gone.

Then I re installed the printer, and before I did anything else, I downloaded the latest firmware and I haven't had this issue since.

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread.  The way I fixed it was unplugging it from the wall socket and pluggin back in and immediately pressing the ON/OFF Button and the "0" on the number pad for about 30 seconds - this seems to have caused a soft reset and then I pressed the ON/OFF BUtton and it then went through a normal shut down.  I then swtiched it on again normally an it seems to work fine.  Important to do the reset immediately after plugging back in otherwise it was switching the power off.
