Hi,
If you have this option:
Open up the HP Solution Center (by going to the start menu --- All Programs --- HP Folder --- HP Office Jet 6500 Folder)
In the solution center go to settings at the bottom of the screen. Then select scanner settings. Click on printer preferences or properties (can’t remember which —sorry) And you want to go to destinations and make sure that you have selected all the scan options on the right.
Now if that doesn’t work – or if your printer doesn’t have solution center, visit:
www.hp.com/go/tools and download the scanner utility or scan and printer doctor and this utility might be able to either fix this error message or at least point you in the right direction.
Hope this helps! 🙂
Good luck!
(Not an HP technician, but I work with printers at my job and have had similar scanning issues)

Hi,
I have a new HP Pavilion dv7. Since buying the laptop I've been able to print but not scan
on my my HP Officejet 6500 709a.
I've downloaded HP Scan doctor (several times) and ended with a screen that says
HP Solutions Center can't be found -- then followed instructions to install the basic
package of printing software so that I will have HP Solutions Center. I've done this
several times, first uninstalling the previous printer software. Same result. I can print but
not scan.
Another oddity. During the printer software installation I've duly clicked, where indicated,
that I am connecting the laptop to the printer via a UBS cable. Then I'm taken to a screen
offering options if I'm having trouble connecting the cable. The cable is connected.
However, there is no "next," only a "back" prompt returning me to the screen asking
if I'm having trouble connecting the cable.
I'm ready to toss this printer in the trash and buy a non-HP version, unless someone has a fix.
Thanks

If that doesn't give you results and fixes the issue, uninstall and re-install the software and drivers.
Please mark a reply "ACCEPTED AS SOLUTION" if it solved your problem, so others can find it.
