HP Officejet Pro 8620
Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)

Moved from setup cartridges to "real" ones - bought legitimately from a retail store.  Changed yellow and black first, no problems, kept printing for a few days, then changed cyan, and all of a sudden my black claimed to be damaged.  Expensive "error" (I didn't do anything wrong) I thought, I'll put a brand new black in ... same problem.  Doesn't matter which black cartiridge I put in, I get this error.

I am off-the-chart angry right now.  Printer is less than a year old, just outload $200 on cartridges and it doesn't work at all.

Hi @AndrewConnolly,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I am sorry to hear about your frustration with having the, "one or more cartridges appear to be damaged," error come up on using brand new cartridges, and I can understand why you would be angry. But with your printer being less than a year old, I would honestly suggest to please call our phone support at 800-474-6836 for further assistance. The HP Support answer to call phone support because the printer is in warranty doesn't anwer the question!  My 8620 is out of warranty, but the FIRST time I replaced the cyan cartridge I got the "One or more cartridges appear to be damaged..." warning.  I have replaced, reset, powered down, cleaned contacts - everything to no avail.  Now what - go buy a new printer?   We need some help here.

Hi Mark20,

Please take a look through the steps in this guide, A 'Cartridge Missing' or 'Incompatible Ink Cartridges' Error Message Displays for HP Officejet Pro 8...

If these steps do not resolve your issue, try having the cartridge replaced under warranty, by contacting phone support, contact HP, for further assistance. (After you fill out the information, you will be given a phone number.) If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. Country-language selector.

Otherwise, if this does not resolve the issue the printer will need to be serviced/or replaced.

Best of luck! :generic:

I repeated the remove/replace cartridges, then powered off/on the printer and it finally fixed itself.   This tells me that there never was anything wrong with the new cartridge, but rather there is a software glitch in the 8620 that randomly gives the "damaged cartridge" message when there is no problem.  I hope this doesn't reappear next time I replace another cartridge.

Hi Mark,

I'm having the same issue. My 8625 printer went out of warranty about 4 months ago. This message just popped up this evening. I have two sets of new cartridges, and  I've replaced all the color cartridges twice and keep getting the same damaged error message. I've been trying to print my daughter's homework for hours. This is driving me nuts. I just want to smash this thing with a hammer. I think I'll buy an Epson printer. They seem to actually work.

SteveS6,

The only way I got the new, undamaged, legitimate cartridges to work was to power down and repeat the cartridge install process about three times.   Finally, everything worked properly.  Obviously HP has a  software issue they have not fixed.

Regards,

Mark

I have the same problem with my 8625. The thing that is really frustrating me right now is that it will print the first half of the page JUST FINE before it throws this error. Every time I either power off and on the printer or remove and reinsert the cartridge (or a brand new one), it prints half of the document and then throws this error. It doesn't matter which document I print either. The fact that it can print the first half of any document over and over means the print cartridge is not the issue. I'm about to take this back to Costco and get an Epson.

I agree with returning the printer.  HP has a software problem and has not fixed it in two versions so far - the 8620 and 8625.  Let Costco deal with it and move on.  I am very disappointed with HP on this issue.
