Long story short. If you turn off the printer, then restart the computer, wait for computer to load everything, then turn on printer then run scan utility 4.2, the C4680 fails the "windows (wia) scan)".

Restarting the printer and then restart the scan utility results in a failed driver.

Hi wthwthwth,

Follow the steps below to check the WIA Service:

1. Type services.msc in run or search program and files

2. Scroll down to the WIA Windows Image Acquisition

3. Make sure that this service is running. Click Stop, and then Restart to make sure

4. Restart the computer

Restart the Dependencies services:

1. Click on Start, in Search box type “services” without quotes.

2. Scroll down until you see Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

3. Double click on it and go to the tab called Dependencies.

4. 2 services should be listed.

5. Exit that window and look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

6. Make sure it’s on manual or if it is on Auto, just leave it. Make sure the service is started though.

7. Go to Shell Hardware Detection and Double click.

8. Set the Start up Type as Manual and hit Apply.

9. You should be able to Start the service by hitting Start.

10. Now you are done and the Twain Manager should be working and not give you an error.

Check dependencies or sub dependencies:

Right click on WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition) selecting first properties and then the dependencies tab. It should list: Remote Procedure Call RPC  and  Shell Harward Detection

Under RPC it will then list DCOM Service Process Launcher and RPC Endpoint Mapper Go back to the main services.msc list and then right click and start all the items listed as dependencies or sub dependencies under WIA

Went through the above list and only changed #8 from auto to manual.

Scanner/printer still failed the "twain" test.

It's always been USB connected, as its the only option.

Hi wthwthwth,

Can you scan using Microsoft Paint?

What operating system is on your computer?

I'm running Win 7-64bit.

The windows fax & scan program will start and connect to the c4680. Then when you start the scan, the printer starts to scan, and then stops/locksup. It's stuck until you kill it in the task mgr, but you still have a small window on your screen showing the scan progress. You can only get rid of that by turning off the c4680.

I have tried everything. The last thing I did was update Adobe flash player and the whole uninstall, clean up, blah blah.  The software needs to be fixed on HP's end. I'm obviously not the only one having problems and it's been nothing but a problem scanning since the first update on my  old computer and I've never been able to scan on my new one.

I WILL NEVER BUY AN HP PRODUCT AGAIN JUST BECAUSE OF THE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS COMPUTER. HP USED TO BE MY FAVORITE.  NO MORE!

I tried the paiint and scan options from my laptop; no go.  😞

Hi wthwthwth,

What happens when you have the printer installed on a different computer?
