dear all,

I tried to follow your recommendations, but it didn't work out. I have installed windows 7 all other equipment is working fine, except for the HP Scanjet 4300 scanner.

Still got the message "scanner could not be found", though the scanner is found in the device manager list. Please help!

thanks, jaap

dear Harlandas,

your remarks were so hopeful. I now have a Dell E6500 with Windows 7 professional and did run the XP compatibility pack. MY scanner worker perfectly with XP.

I followed all your steps is detail, All looked to go well, all programmes were installed. However when I click on "HP Precisionscan LTX", the program starts though gives an error: Scanner could not be initialized (Scanner could not be found.)

This is strange because the scanners is found in the device manager, and identified as an HP 4300C scanner. As everybodys already said, it has the wrong driver, and the right driver 'cannot be found'.

What can I do? I do not want just to buy a new one and throw away another piece of equipment that is 100% filling my needs.

please help,

Jaap Prins

send me please this scanner driver

HP does not have a driver for our good old scanjet 4300 under Windows 7. Only way seems to be to install the XP emulator and then approach the scanner.

The HP helpdesk only kept saying I should buy a new scanner. I have principle objections to throw away good working equipment, just because HP does not want to provide up to date software.

If you find another solution please let me know.

I bought a new scanner alright - but now that I have 2 perfectly functioning obsolete HP scanners that I paid $1400 for....My new CANON scanner is awesome!!  I m never buying HP again.  MY new HP laptop already needs a new battery and it isn't even a year old. Brand domination never lasts long does it? You would think HP would realize the importance of providing support when operating system upgrades are forced on consumers by HP as well.

  1. Download and extract the package: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/software/sj657en.exe
  2. Right-click SETUP.EXE -> Properties -> Set Compatibility to Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
  3. Run SETUP.EXE
  4. -- Use the shortcut or hppsapp.exe for scanning

Thanks Harlandas, it works!

I've had it with HP!  I have a HP laptop w/Win7, 3 HP printers and a fax. My ScanJet 4300C won't work on Win 7, no drivers. I shouldn't have to do a work-around.  HP products last, but not their support. When I call support, they say e-mail. When I e-mail they say call support.  What the heck!  You can't even complain, not that it would do any good.

Hi lolowenstein,

would you confirm that following the directions in the Harlandas post of 12/20/09 allow you to scan with the 4300C in Win7?

Thanks.

Well guys sadly after 11 years my HP Scanjet 4300C stopped working.  I got my money's worth (paid $25).  Pretty good durability for an electronic.
