HP deskjet 5850 inkjet
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have an HP pavillion  p6-2035uk desktop pc and an hp deskjet 5850 inkjet colourprinter which is no longer supported by HP since I put the last huge  update through a week or two ago.

I have spent days trying to resolve this problem to no avail.

The system will not accept the original HP disk for the 5800 series, it will not accept the 5600 driver which I used succesfully before, I have used the HP Scan doctor for printers in fact I have tried everything to try to resolve the problem.

I upgraded to windows 10 soon after its launch a few months ago, the printer was working fine until this last update and now in two minds whether to ditch windows 10 altogether as the problems outway the functionailty...Any suggestions???

Seems my only options are to purchase a new printer or revert the whole system back to Windows 7.

Hi @Terrybull,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you're unable to print in Windows 10 to your HP Deskjet 5850 Color Inkjet Printer. I would be happy to help you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution' if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.

I see that you upgraded to Windows 10 and since then you cannot print. The print drivers are not available due to the age of the device. However, you could always try using an alternate print driver.

Please see this guide for a list of supported Windows 10 print drivers:

To try an alternate print driver:
Install the printer driver with the Add Printer wizard
Use the Windows Add Printer tool to install the built-in driver.
NOTE: If you already connected the printer to the computer with a USB cable and you can print, the driver installed. If you are having issues printing, continue with the following steps.
  1. Search Windows for devices, and click Devices and Printers in the list of results.
  2. Click Add a printer.
  3. If a 'Choose a device or printer to add to this PC' window opens, do one of the following actions:
    • Select your printer if it displays in the list, click Next, follow the instructions to install the driver, and try to print.
    • If Windows does not find your printer, click The printer I want isn't listed and continue to the next step.

  4. Select the connection type or method to add the printer, click Next and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.
NOTE: If you selected the Add a local printer method, continue to the next step.

  5. Select Use an existing port (LPT1: Printer Port), and click Next.
  6. In the Install, the printer driver window, click Windows Update to update the list of available printer drivers.
  7. In the Manufacturer list, select HP.
  8. In the Printers list, select an alternate printer model such as HP Deskjet 5700 and click Next.
NOTE: If you do not see your printer model, change the Manufacturer name from HP to Hewlett-Packard or Hewlett Packard, and look for your printer model again.

  9. On the Type, a printer name screen, change the printer name to HP Deskjet 5850 Printer (optional) and click Next to install the driver.

Good morning and a big thank you for coming back to me.

Given the information you sent me, I have been trying for the last 2 hours going through the various options from the original printer disc for the 5800 printer, I have used the Print Wizard, I have used HP Print and Scan Doctor, tried to use the deskjet 5700 driver as suggested (previously used the 5600 driver which worked originally before this update for windows 10 went through) and still no joy.

I despair over the time I have spent on this problem and pretty much resigned to the fact that I will go back in the registry and get rid of windows 10 altogether, never to go near it anytime in the future.

I appreciate the help given but the problem seems to be insolvable.

As a last resort I may ask a friend to go over everything I have tried to achieve as a double check, but at the moment this case is dead in the water.

I will indded advise you should there be any developments.

Many thanks,

Terrybull

My daughter was able to get our HP 5850 printer working with a new Windows 10 laptop using the HP Deskjet 5600 Series driver.  We have this printer connected to our router with a static ip address, so she installed it as a tcp/ip printer.  It seems to be working OK, so far.

Many thanks for all the support given on the forum.

During the Christmas period my son visited us for a week or so, he is a computer specialist who rectified the problem, of a fashion as it appears installation of windows 10 hosed some of system completely..

We actually ran the complete update agaIn from tbe start of windows 10 being installed which reconfigured everything afresh which seemed to do the trick, windows 10 at present is working fine at the moment.

Unfortunately, the printer does not operate properly especially when colour is requested on the default setting, seems this is more to do with Google Chrome settings so we have to now be satified with Black only by tweeking the properties section of the printer.....compromise has to be accepted on this occasion or a new printer at some stage.

Hope the information helps others for the future.

Ever hopefull,

Terrybull.

Here's how I got my hp deskjet 5850 to work with Windows 10:

The USB connection doesn't seem to work at all so I connected it to my

router (which connects all my home network devices) via an ethernet cable.

Unplug the printer's power cable and plug it back in (not sure if this was necessary).

Hit the network button (the button with the check mark on it (I didn't even know that existed before!)).

A page should print out which shows an IP Address something like 192.168.1.33.

In Windows 10, open the control panel and navigate to Printers and Scanners.

Click "Add a Printer", wait a few moments, and then click on "The printer I want isn't listed".

Select the "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname" option.

Click Next.

Enter your printer's IP address in the "Hostname or IP address" box.

Click Next.

In the list on the left select "HP".

In the list on the right select "HP Deskjet 5700 Series (HPA)".

Click Next a few more times.

Click "Print Test Page".

You should be good to go.

I think the general idea is that if your specific printer isn't supported, you may be able to get it to work by selecting something close.  In this case the HP 5700 series is pretty close to the HP 5800 series.

Cheers!

Hi everyone who tried to assist in my problem with the printer, really appreciated.

i was so frustrated with the whole business I ended up buying a new HP Printer Envy which has made life so much easier.

I still have the deskjet 5850 and hope to use on another laptop that doesn't operate on windows 10 rather than dispose of the item.

A very big thank you to all those who have taken the time to suggest ways around this issue.....nice to know there are caring people in the world ready to help whenever needed.

Thank you all once again.
