Ok ... in the words of Sheldon Cooper Phd ... " In what universe is this problem RESOLVED - WORKAROUND" !!
Now it's 01-07-2014 and I don't see any kind of fix, patch, flash etc from either Apple or HP ... did I miss somehing? I'll refrain from making any kind of sarcastic remarks ... hopefully someone has a real fix for this problem and I'm just missing it.
Yes ... I would have simply ( or not so simply ) backed off the OSX 10.9.1 had I even realized that this issue was outstanding but that was several weeks ago and I'm not about to go through that process if I can avoid it!

Hello rbartlet,
The G4050 has software available on the HP Website. I have included a link here for the 'HP Scanjet ICA Software for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9'. Once you have installed this software, are you able to use the full functionality?
Thank you.

Not working on the B110a ... still cannot save the scan to the computer latest apple software, latest Driver ... but not compatible !
It is incredibly frustrating when HP send upgrades that DO NOT WORK ... happens a lot !

I have just updated my iMac and is now using Mavericks.
When I try to scan a document with my HP Photosmart C6180 (All-in-One) it suddenly doesn´t work!
It works as usual when I scan a document but when I saves it and then tries to email it, it looks like something totally unuseful. This is a fact both when I´m saving is as a PDF and as a Picture (jpg).
Then I downloaded the latest update/driver here at HP.com but it doesn´t help.
What´s wrong - and what shall I do?
Rgds
