Hp Scan and Capture can't find device

I can print to my printer no problem but when I tried to run HP Scan and Capture, it asked to select a device and then couldn't find it. I even entered the IP Address and it said no device was found.

When I ran All in one printer remote, it said printer status was unknown.

I literally just printed something to it 5 minutes before.

It doesn't look like HP Scan and Capture is compatible with Windows 8.1. On the HP Scan and Capture download page it states:To use this app, upgrade to Windows 10.

How to Scan: Windows 8.

Introduction

This document explains how to scan in Windows 8. There are multiple ways to scan a photo or document, using either the HP software that comes with your printer, or functionality built into the Windows operating system. This document provides instructions on scanning with either option.

NOTE: If you are not using the latest version of Windows 8, the information in this document might not match. You can get the latest version from the Microsoft Store.

How to scan with HP software

The instructions provided in this section require that you have HP Solution Center software installed.

Set up scan settings

Before scanning, HP recommends that you set up the options for your scan settings. If you do not set up the options, the default settings might not yield the desired results. Follow these steps to review and change your scan settings.

Step one: Open Scan Settings in HP Solution Center

1. Open HP Solution Center with one of the following methods:
   • Double-click the HP Solution Center icon on the desktop.
   • Right-click the Start button () in the lower left corner of the screen, click Search, type Devices and printers, click Devices and Printers, double-click the icon for your printer, and then click HP Solution Center.
2. Click Settings, and then click Scan Settings.

Step two: Review and select the scan settings options

Review the information for each of the following scan settings to help you decide what options to select.

 NOTE: The available settings and names of the settings options might vary by printer.

Scan Picture settings

You can set up default Scan Picture settings with the following options.

Prompt for settings at the time of scan

• Select this option if you want to choose a specific Scan Picture scan shortcut each time you scan a picture with HP Solution Center (recommended).
• If you do not select this option, HP Solution Center will use a default scan shortcut option each time you use the Scan Picture option. Specify the scan shortcut you want to use for every picture scan.

Show preview scan

• Select this option to have the HP software generate a preview of the scan each time you scan. This lets you to review the scan quality and make additional edits before the scan is complete (recommended).
• If you do not select this option, you will not see a preview of your scanned image before the scan job is complete.

Scan Document settings

You can set up default Scan Document settings with the following options.

Prompt for settings at the time of scan

• Select this option if you want to choose a specific Scan Document scan shortcut each time you scan a document with HP Solution Center (recommended).
• If you do not select this option, HP Solution Center will use a default scan shortcut option each time you use the Scan Documentoption. Specify the scan shortcut you want to use for every document scan.

Show preview scan

• Select this option to have the HP software generate a preview of the scan each time you scan. This allows you to review the scan quality and make additional edits before the scan is complete (recommended).
• If you do not select this option, you will not see a preview of your scanned document before the scan job is complete.

Scan preferences

Change the following options to set the automatic scan preferences for scanned pictures, documents, and other device settings.

NOTE: The available scan preferences options might vary by printer.

Picture scan shortcuts

• Automatically straighten scanned pictures
• Automatically adjust exposure
• Automatically adjust color
• Use enhanced color (vivid color)
• Automatically adjust black and white threshold
• Prompt for additional scanned pages when scan preview is turned off

Document scan shortcuts

• Automatically straighten scanned documents
• Automatically rotate landscaped images
• Automatically adjust exposure
• Automatically adjust black and white threshold
• Prompt for additional scanned pages when scan preview is turned off

Device settings

• Use JPEG compress for upload (helps keep file sizes small)
• Show reserve dialog during network scan

Button settings

You can set up the default printer control panel button settings with the following options.

• Select this option to have the HP software prompt you for any changes you want to make to the scan settings before completing the scan job (recommended).
• If you do not select this option, the HP software uses default scan settings when completing the scan job.

Show preview scan

• Select this option to have the HP software generate a preview of the scan each time you scan. This allows you to review the scan quality and make additional edits before the scan is complete (recommended).
• If you do not select this option, you will not see a preview of your scanned document before the scan job is complete.

Create a new Scan Shortcut

1. Review the default Scan Shortcut Settings for the selected Scan Shortcut, and change any basic settings as desired.
2. Click Save Shortcut.
3. Type a new Shortcut Name and an Abbreviated Name, and then select a new icon.
4. Click Save. The new icon displays in the Scan Shortcut list.

Delete a Scan Shortcut

1. Click the Scan Shortcut that you want to delete.
2. Click Delete Shortcut.
3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.

   NOTE: If the Delete Shortcut button is grayed out after selecting a shortcut, that shortcut is integrated into the software and cannot be deleted.

Add or remove Scan Shortcuts

• To add a Scan Shortcut, select the shortcut that you want to add, and then click Add.
• To remove a shortcut, select the shortcut that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
• After you make any changes, click Update the device to refresh the list of shortcuts available from the printer control panel.

Scan to... Setup

Change the following options to set the 'Scan to...' preferences for scanned items.

• To add a Scan to destination, select the destination that you want to add, and then click Add.
• To remove a Scan to destination, select the destination that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
• After you make any changes, click Update the device to refresh the list of Scan to destinations available from the printer control panel.

How to scan a general document or photo

Follow these steps to scan a general document or photo.

Step one: Load the photo or document 

You can scan from the scanner glass or the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), if your printer has one.

1. Make sure the printer is turned on and that it is connected to the computer.
2. Load the document or photo.
   • Document
     When scanning a document you can position it directly on top of the scanner glass or you can use the ADF tray (if your printer has one).

     • Scanner glass
       Place the document print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.
     • ADF
       Place a single-page or multi-page document into the ADF. The printed side faces up and the top edge goes into the tray first. Adjust the width guides to fit the document.

     NOTE: If your printer does not have an ADF and you are scanning a multi-page document, you will need to load each page on the scanner glass one at a time to scan the document.

   • Photo
     Place the photo image side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.

     CAUTION: Do not load photos in the ADF. Use the scanner glass instead to prevent damage to photos and the printer.

Step two: Scan the item

1. Search Windows for your printer model name, and click the printer name in the list of results.
   HP Solution Center opens.
2. Select the appropriate scan option for the item you are scanning.
   • Choose Scan Document if you are scanning a text document with or without graphics.
   • Choose Scan Picture if you are scanning photos or artwork.
   The HP Scan Shortcuts screen displays with options to change the scan settings.
   • What if the HP Scan Shortcuts screen does not display?
3. Click the appropriate option under Scan Shortcuts.
   • What scan shortcuts are available?
4. Review the default scan settings for the selected Scan Shortcut, and change any settings as needed.
   • To change the basic scan settings
     Click the drop-down arrow () to select the setting that you want to change.
   • To change the advanced Photo/Document settings
     Click Advanced Picture Settings or Advanced Document Settings, and then select the setting you need.

     Click Save to file Save Options to change the following settings (depending on your printer):

     • Specify the location to send saved scans on the computer
     • Edit the file name of the saved scan
     • Specify how the HP software completes the scan action:
       • Opens the scan file
       • Launches File Explorer
   • Resolution and color settings information
     Resolution and color settings can impact overall quality of your scan. The following information can help you decide when you need to set custom resolution and color settings for your scan.

     • Resolution: This setting is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Higher resolution produces higher quality images because the software uses more pixels per inch in the image. The pixels are smaller and capture greater color detail. However, higher resolution settings increase the output file size of the scan. You might want to use a higher resolution setting if you are scanning photos or documents with graphics that require detail. If you are scanning black and white text, higher resolution is not necessary.

       NOTE: Higher resolution settings require more system resources and increase the time required to complete a scan job. If you have an older computer with limited resources, higher resolution files might cause computer issues. If the scan fails at high resolution, try decreasing the resolution setting.

     • Color: Use this setting for scanning high quality color photos or documents that have multiple colors.
     • Black and white: Use this setting to scan text-only documents and for the best OCR results with black text. It provides the fastest scan speed and the smallest scan file sizes.
     • Grayscale: Use this setting for scans that contain continuous-tone or shading, and black and white images. This setting can produce more accurate scans than the Black and White option, but the file size will be larger. Grayscale is the best setting for heavily shaded images.

   NOTE: HP Solution Center versions and options vary depending on your printer. For specific instructions on all the settings the software offers, click the Help button on the screen you are changing settings on.

5. Click Scan. The scan preview window opens.
   • Want to make changes?
6. When the scan completes, perform one of the following actions:
   • Click the Plus sign () on the right side of the window to scan additional pages or add additional photo selections.
   • If you are not satisfied with the scan, click the X () to delete the scanned file, and then click Back to try the scan again.
   • Click Finish to save the scanned file.

How to scan as editable text (OCR)

Follow these steps to scan a text document that you can edit.

Step one: Load the document

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray, if your printer has one.

NOTE: If your printer does not have an ADF and you are scanning a multi-page document, you will need to load each page on the scanner glass one at a time to scan the document.

1. Make sure the printer is turned on and that it is connected to the computer.
2. Load the document.
   • Scanner glass
   • ADF

Step two: Scan the document

1. Search Windows for your printer model name, and click the printer name in the list of results.
   HP Solution Center opens.
2. Click Scan Document. The HP Scanning screen displays.
3. Under Scan Shortcuts, click Save as Editable Text or Text (OCR) to..., depending on your printer.

   NOTE: If Save as Editable Text or Text (OCR) to... does not display in the options, your printer did not ship with HP OCR software. You might be able to scan as editable text if you install software from a third-party vendor such as OmniPage, FineReader, TextBridge, or SimpleOCR. HP recommends that you contact the vendor to see if your printer is compatible, and for steps to use the software.

4. Review the default scan settings for the selected Scan Shortcut, and change any settings as needed.
   • To change the basic scan settings
   • To change the advanced Photo/Document settings
   • Resolution and color settings information

   NOTE: HP Solution Center versions and options vary depending on your printer. For specific instructions on all the settings the software offers, click the Help button on the screen you are changing settings on.

5. Click Scan. The scan preview window opens.
   • Want to make changes?
6. When the scan completes, perform one of the following actions:
   • Click the Plus sign () on the right side of the window to scan additional pages.
   • If you are not satisfied with the scan, click the X () to delete the scanned file, and then click Back to try the scan again.
   • Click Finish to save the scanned file.

How to attach a scan to an email

Follow these steps scan a document or photo, and then attach it to an email message.

NOTE: Your printer might feature additional options for scanning directly to email or directly to a network folder. Review the specific documentation for your printer to see if it supports these options.

Step one: Load the photo or document

You can scan from the scanner glass or the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), if your printer has one.

1. Make sure the printer is turned on and that it is connected to the computer.
2. Load the document or photo.
   • Document
   • Photo

Step two: Scan the item

1. Search Windows for your printer model name, and click the printer name in the list of results.
   HP Solution Center opens.
2. Select the appropriate scan option for the item you are scanning.

Step three: Attach the scanned item to an email message

1. Log into your email account, create a new email message, and then click the link to attach or insert a file.
2. In the pop-up window, browse to the destination on the computer where you saved your scan.
3. Double-click the name of the scanned file to attach it to the email.

How to scan a multi-page original text document into a single file

Follow these steps to scan a multi-page text document into a single file.

Step one: Load the document 

You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray, if your printer has one.

NOTE: If your printer does not have an ADF and you are scanning a multi-page document, you will need to load each page on the scanner glass one at a time to scan the document.

1. Make sure the printer is turned on and that it is connected to the computer.
2. Load the document.
   • Scanner glass
   • ADF

This doesn't help my issue if the solution is to upgrade to windows 10.

I did read all of the post and I guess it seems the response is to go to windows 8 or windows 10, correct?

I can't even use windows scan because it isn't seeing the printer. 

I just printed to it and it worked fine but the scanner isn't working.

Is there any other app or software to use without upgrading or downgrading?

Thanks for the reply.

If you wish to use HP Scan and Capture app you need to upgrade to Windows 10. In addition, Windows Scan is also not compatible with Windows 8.1, therefore it will not work.

You don't need either of those applications to scan, they are alternative methods of scanning.

Do you have the Full Feature Software installed? 

If you don't have the HP Software installed use the HP Printer Install Wizard. The HP Printer Install Wizard automatically finds the best available print driver for your HP Printer. It is available only for Windows 10, 8, and 7. Download and run Printer Install Wizard a free tool from HP. When this link is clicked, HP Printer Install Wizard is downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.

Once the installation is complete, try scanning using HP Scan by following the instructions from my first post.

If you're experiencing issues with HP Scan, it would helpful to know if you're receiving any error messages to diagnose the issue. 

If you have the HP Software installed, please download and run the Print and Scan Doctor, it will likely diagnose and resolve the issue you are experiencing.

What were the results when you ran the Print and Scan Doctor? (did it print or scan, any error messages)

If the issue persists, please follow the steps within this guide to see if we can fix scanning, A 'No Computer Detected' or 'Connection Error' Message Displays during Scanning for HP Officejet 650.... This document will be useful for your printer also.
