Let's make a list of all those HP printers no longer working after upgrading to El Capitan 10.11.
I'll start:
HP Photosmart C5280
copy the list, add your printer, use reply and post. This will keep the list growing.

Hi @DavidPBarr,
I may be able to help. I know you suggest adding printers that do not work with El Capitan, but instead I can offer a complete list of printers that are compatible with both Yosemite and El Capitan.
This document is for HP printers that work with OS X v10.11 El Capitan and OS X v10.10 Yosemite.
This document also includes an FAQ section that can help with commonly asked questions such as 'what driver types are available for OS X', and offers a list of printers that will not work with these versions of OS X.
Your printer, the C5280 may not have a full feature software package available, but there is an Apple Software Update that will allow you to use your printer to print and scan! You might consider taking a look at this document: Installing a Mac Printer Driver Using Apple Software Update.
Please consider clicking Accept as Solution below my post so that others can find this message and see what options they too have available to them. Thanks.

My printer, the Photosmart C5280 worked well under Yosemite, and under the release version of El Capitan 10.11 so I guess that means it meets the full feature criterion you mention.
I have already used the Installing a Mac Printer Driver Using Apple Software Update. section of the website which did not resolve the issue.
I would be more than happy to accept a solution if it were to be provided to me. Its Thumbs Down I'm afraid.
I had to dig out a very old HP Deskjet 5550 from the dusty recesses of my garage. It was bought eons (aeons) ago. It works on 10.11.1 while the newer printer, C5280 above doesn't.
Unless resolved I, and perhaps many others, will turn my back on HP. So much for thirty years of loyalty.
Are HP the Volkswagon of the tech world. Can't trust them to do the right thing by customers of longstanding.
I and the person who created the discussion are NOT the only customers affected. I'm guessing the number is not measured in hundreds.

It's a bad omen when the HP staff don't even know 10.11 doesn't use "Apple Software Update" and HP website does not mention App Store, and there's no HP software on it.
What's going on? Are HP and Apple speaking to each other?
Is that the final list, Carolyn, or will more be added?
Thank you.

Mind me, I am completely clueless when it comes to printers and software and all that.
I am aware that the Officejet 5740 printer no does not work in El Capitan 10.11, does this mean that the printer will always be unusable to that operating system from here on out? Is this a problem that can or will be fixed? I have recenly bought an Officejet 5740 printer, however have not opened. My mac runs on El Capitan 10.10 and i see that an update is present for the current 10.11 version. Thanks.
