I also have bought a new 7610 and it would not scan, but I think I found out why. When I open the scanner to put a paper or book on the flatbed window, the cable on the back left corner of the scanner lid gets pulled very tightly, and it causes the scanner to not work.

As long as I make sure I don't open the lid the full height, the scanner and the auto feeder work perfectly.

I think I'll use this for now, but something will need to be done about that cable before it gets damaged.

Please let me know if you obtain a solution as I have the same problem .  Unable to scan or fax and no additional software provides a solution. I get the message  'Unable to resolve problem, even after restart...go to HP Customer Care for help'.  Of course, they offer no solution.

I got a good deal on an Epson! Seriously, and it faxes and scans. Have you tried "reverse" scanning - like from Acrobat? Telling the software program to import file from scanner? Best of luck to you; HP was no help to me either.

This pretty much says it all.. I have had this for no more than two months... it worked perfectly .. then went to use the scanner and spent 4 hours doing all the normal troubleshooting (I used to fix this stuff for a living) .. short of voiding the warranty.... this thing will no scan. does not even try... has not been moved or touched other than testing the copy when I got it ... printed a few flyers 25count .. worked then.. now no type of scanning works. Copy should work outside of any type of external hardware... but did reinstall software and updated it till no update was left... what now? is this a lemon. or has anyone gotting any kind of help from HP to resolve this?

I tried the HP recommended reset 3 times, with no result.     Yes, this problem could be due to the black cable from the flat bed to the scanner lid, in the back left hand corner.  I tried releasing the tension on the black cable, did a reset, ( un plug power cable, switch off, plug in power cable, switch on ) and it is coppying again. Thanks for your suggestion.

Ive just had this happen to me too.. I Usually I resort to jumping on my printers but that has never really worked out in my favor. I noticed the scanner failure message appeared after I tried copying from the document feeder, I would always use the flatbed. The 'scan light bar thing' seemed stuck in the small window where the document feeder is located, I simply put the whole machine on the right side and shut it down, then powered back on while slapping it 'gently' on the left side to dislodge the light bar. Works fine now. Definitely the last time I buy an HP product nonetheless.
