You need to remove the front, right bezel, tilt out the board without disconnecting the ribbon cables and pull the CMOS battery (being careful not to break the clip of course). Wait about 5 min, put it back in and you printer thinks it's just been manufactured. Voila - no more expiration issues.

I can take pictures and post the process if anyone wants - this will definitely work. It has for me 🙂

Hi @cdentrumg,

Welcome to the HP forums!

I'm sorry to hear your printer continues to tell you your ink is expired, even with brand new cartridges, but I would be happy to do my best to assist you and hopefully get this resolved for you Smiley Happy

I would recommend that you remove all of the cartridges from the printer, and once they are all removed, follow the steps in this 'Ink Cartridge Problem - The Following Ink Cartridge(s) Appear to be Missing or Damaged' Message Dis... document to clean the contacts on the cartridges. I would also like you to unplug the printer (from the rear of the machine) during this process, and clean the contacts inside the printer as well. Once everything is cleaned please press and hold the power button on the printer for about 10 seconds to drain any excess power the printer may be holding on to.

Once you've completed those steps please close up the printer, with the ink still out, and plug the printer back in. It will then bring up a message indicating that the cartridges are missing or damaged. At that point please go ahead and reseat the cartridges and hopefully that error will be gone, but if not just let me know what happens and we will go from there!

Hope this helps, and if not, hope to hear from you soon Smiley Happy

Repeated from my earlier post in case there are any others with the same issue that stumble across this thread and are at the verge of sending their PhotoSmart 8250 for a very unhappy dirt nap (not unlike the fate of the photocopier in the movie Office Space) I will provide this link.

Be very careful when following the instructions - my recommendation would be to do something fun or relaxing before this and not directly following a likely fruitless/endless search through online forums to attempt fixing this issue.

Expired Ink Error messages expired - the HARD way (forgive my pun lol)

If you're not hasty and do this carefully you'll have reset the date on the printer and it thinks it's the manufacture date.

As an earlier poster reponding to VisionAiry had mentioned, it's much easier to slip a piece of plastic under the clip for the CMOS battery to interrupt the connection in these instructions rather than prying up the clip and risking breaking it - just leave that piece in there for 5 min and it will have the same effect as removing the battery.

THIS WAS NOT A ONE-TIME FIX FOR ME. IT HAS CONTINUED TO WORK WITH ALL OF THE PRINTER CARTRIDGES I HAVE USED SINCE DOING THIS.

Enjoy! inorga

Hi,

I followed every instruction  for this forum about overidding the expiration issue on photosmart printer 8250. None were sucesssful. I was wondering if you could send me the reset options you privately messaged this user. I also read the risks about reseting the printer and am willing to try it as my warranty is already expired. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

@VisionAiry wrote:

Since the printer will not print, would you like me to try to look up the process for restoring the printer back to a like-new condition?  As I said, it can be risky so here is a forum post written by Bob_Headrick "Printer Resets: What You Should Know" and if you are willing to try it then I will private message you those steps.

Hi @jtcl,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Some HP printers don't have any resets further than unplugging it for 30 seconds, and the Photosmart 8250 is one them as far as I can tell.

If you've tried the steps within @inorga's post in this same thread (jump to it by clicking here) and you're not able to press OK to bypass the message then I'd suggest calling our technical support team and inquire about a possible discount on a newer printer.

Hope that helps and you have a good day! 🙂

I have the same issue expired ink when they are still full. This is forcing the buyer to continually buy ink all the time and it's expensive. I will not purchase another HP printer i'm going to office depot and I will find one that doesn't force you to buy products just to use their product. I spent a lot of money on this when I got it and it's barely used. HP sucks!
