Suddenly I can no longer scan and get a prompt that says 'The overview scan failed to complete'. I rarely use my scanner and have had a couple of updates that may have blocked my ability to scan as I was having no problem a few weeks ago. No problem printing. Suggestions?

Hello @LisaKay,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are no longer able to scan from your HP Officejet 6600 e-All-in-One Printer to your Mac OS X 10.9 computer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. Can I please have you follow the steps below to correct any software or driver conflicts that a computer update may have caused.
Step 1: Reset the Print System:
To start, I am going to have you Reset the Print System on your Mac as it is important that we have a nice clean slate to work with for troubleshooting. Please click here for instructions on how to perform the Reset. When the website opens follow the steps under 'Resetting the printing system in OS X Lion' as the steps are the same for your Mac OS X 10.9 Operating System. This Reset will remove every printer from your Mac. However, it does not uninstall the printers. Therefore, should you use other printers on this Mac, once the Reset is complete simply ensure that the printers are connected via a USB Cable or Network connected and (+) Add them back in. Do not add your HP Officejet back in at this time.
Once the reset is complete, please proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Uninstall Drivers and Software:
Next, please click here for steps on how to properly uninstall your printer. Once the site opens select the dropdown for 'Mac OS X v10.6, OS X v10.7, OS X v10.8, and OS X v10.9' and follow the steps to complete the uninstall process.
Once the uninstall is complete, please continue on.
Step 3: Verify and Repair your Disk Permissions on the Mac:
- Open Macintosh HD and go to Applications
- Go to the Utilities Folder
- Open the Disk Utility
- Select the Hard Drive volume you are using (usually on the left)
- Select Verify Disk Permissions
- Once that process is done, select Repair Disk Permissions
Step 4: Check for Apple Updates:
- Go to Apple
- Select System Preferences
- Select Software Update
- Click Update Now
- Install your available updates
- Restart your computer
Step 5: Install Device:
- Please click here to download the latest drivers for your Officejet
- Once the website opens please select the Download button on the top left
- Once the download is complete please follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall your printer
Once your printer has been successfully reinstalled, please test the scanning function again.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Best of luck! 🙂

I am having the same problem. I followed all of your recommended steps, but the problem persists. I have had this printer for quite some time, and it continues to print just fine. It is only the scan feature that has suddenly "disappeared" (I just scanned successfully last week). Any other suggestions? Very frustrating.

I have a Deskjet Ink Advantge 4615 connected to a MacOSX 10.10.3
This problem never happened before installing the OSX 9.0
After installing OSX 9.0 it happened once in a while, but since I installed OSX 10 it is happening about 3 to 4 times a month - very upsetting.
Tried your advice about a couple of months ago but did not work. Changed USB cables, changed ports - at no avail.
The only way to reset the 4615 was to restart the Mac.
But this time following your advice it did work, thanks. Just hope it will stabilize !

Hi @rottnsox ,
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publically post ( serial numbers and case details).
If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here
Regards,
George

I followed all the instructions.
- I verified/reset permissions using the Disk Utility, and
- I got the Apple software update (rebooting)
- I could not see the Library folder (and thus not the Preferences folder beneath it) so I opened a Bash terminal shell and navigated my way to /users/my-user-name/Library/Preferences where I used "rm" to remove the two files com.hp.devicemonitor.plist and com.hp.printerutility.plist.lockfile which were the only files containing the string "hp".
- I reinstalled the software HP Inkjet SW OSX Mavericks software. (I am running 10.9)
One odd thing: The HP Utility found both the printer as connected by USB and the printer as connected on my LAN (I checked the IP address with the all-in-one and it matched).
- When I tried to select the USB-connected printer, I got an eternal (at least 15 minutes) busy barber pole with a claim to be "Communicating with the printer". There was a cancel button and I pushed it after waiting 10 minutes or so.
- I then selected the LAN one and the rest of the installation completed in seconds successfully (or so the installer claimed).
When I then tried to scan from the printer, I got "An error occurred while communicating with the scanner".
Thus the scanner is still not functional.
Please advise.
UPDATE: I later unplugged the all-in-one, waited a few seconds, and then plugged it back in. The scan then worked. However, in all the above, somehow I do not have privileges any more to my "Pictures" folder. Arrgh.

Hi all,
same problem with Canon MP640, so it is obviously not HP specific.
Problem started suddenly for no obvious reason - no changes in hardware/software/network.
Solved by unplugging the ethernet cable and replugging it into another port on my router.
Thanks for the suggestion in this thread.
I do not understand why this should make any difference!
Power on/power off should do something similar, but that did not help. Nor did rebooting my macbook.
I did not reset printing system - too much trouble.

Hey @fatlobster,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that you're getting the error 'Overview Scan Failed to Complete' when scanning from your HP Photosmart Ink Advantage e-All-in-One K510a Printer to your Mac OS X 10.11 computer. I'd like to assist you today with resolving this issue. Due to the age of your specific printer there is actually no downloadable Full Feature Software and Driver package released by HP for your product for Mac OS X 10.11. There actually hasn't been a Full Feature Software and Driver package released for this model of printer since Mac OS X 10.6. Therefore, we are relying solely on an Apple Update generic driver to provide print and scan functionality for your printer. With that being said, can I have you try the steps below.
- Step 1: Reset the Print System:
To start, I am going to have you Reset the Print System on your Mac. Please click here for instructions on how to perform the Reset. When the website opens follow the steps under 'Resetting the printing system in OS X Lion' as the steps are the same for Mac OS X 10.11. This Reset will remove every printer from your Mac. However, it does not uninstall the printers. Therefore, should you use other printers on this Mac, once the Reset is complete simply ensure that the printers are connected via a USB Cable or Network connected and (+) Add them back in. Do not add your HP Photosmart back in at this time.
Once the reset is complete, please proceed to the next step.
- Step 2: Manually install Driver Package:
Please click here to manually download the Apple Update package for HP Printer Drivers v3.1. Once the website opens select the Download button at the top. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the driver package.
- Step 3: Check for Apple Updates:
- Go to Apple
- Select System Preferences
- Select Software Update
- Click Update Now
- Install your available updates
- Restart your computer
- Step 4: Add the Device:
1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
2. Click Print & Scan, and then check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list.
3. Click the name of your printer, click the minus sign (), and then delete the printer.
4. Click the plus sign (), click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer,
5. Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu. Ensure that the Photosmart driver is selected.
6. Click Add to add the printer to the list.
Once installed, test scanning. Should the scan error persist, can you try scanning through the HP Easy Scan software to confirm if it works?
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. You may also click the "Thumbs Up" icon below to say "thanks for helping!" Good luck! 🙂
