Hi@draretired,
Thanks for stopping by HP Support Forums.
I came across your post and would like to help.
Need assistance in finding the paper-handling specifications of the printer. Is that, correct?
I would like to share the product specifications link which will ideally help you know more on paper handling capabilities of the printer.
Hope the solution answers your query. Feel free to reply back for more.

Hello, @draretired
Thanks for the reply! I would like to jump in with a suggestion 🙂
I understand that you need to print 3*5 index cards. You can try and create a custom paper size so that you can print on this particular paper size. I found a wonderful document which gives illustrative step by step instructions on how to create custom paper sizes.
Please go to http://hp.care/2cdQDMt and follow the instructions mentioned under “Create custom paper sizes in Windows”.
PS: You can try and use some 3rd party applications like QuickBooks, Quicken etc. to try and print checks. Simply search in google on "How to print checks" and you will get some promising links.
Those steps should do the trick, let me know how that goes!
Good luck 🙂
