After removing all 4580 software and reinstalling the printer as a wireless printer with a static ip seems to be a stable, workable solution.  Printer has stayed awake for last 24 hours, accepted and printed a new print request. No need to learn how to start your car.

Has "removing all 4580 software and reinstalling the printer as a wireless printer with a static ip" on a Vista systems worked for others? I'm not quite sure how this solves the original problem of the actual printers paanel freezing up.

I've had the printer for a few days now and am also ready to pack it up and look for alternatives.

it seems like the printer freezes when it's acquiring the IP address from the router itself. but if you assign a manual IP yourself, then the printer wont need to ask the router, and so it will not freeze. you could alternatively try updating the firmware of your router if it is not the latest one, since no firmware update for the printer is available at this point.

I've been using a static IP address since I first configured this printer and the panel still freezes up on me after inactivity. I give up ... time to bring it back.

Unfortunately, this is a known problem with the C4580.  You'll get a lot of bad and weird advice about using static IP addresses or surge protectors and other stuff.  The truth is, there's something wrong with the printer when it goes into sleep mode.  It doesn't matter whether the connection is wireless or USB.

My C4580 has the exact same problem as yours -- after it goes to sleep, the printer won't wake up unless I pull power to the printer.

Oddly enough, the printer hasn't had this problem recently.  I really didn't do anything.

I still like the printer.  For me, it works very well after I power cycle the printer.  Is it annoying?  Yes.  Can I live with it?  Sure.  I like the small size and I like that it's wireless -- even though I have flip the power strip off then on to get it going once in a while.

OK, I am convinced there is a problem with the C4580 interface.  Through a laborious end-user diagnosis and intermittent success in the end the printer after a period of time will go into sleep mode and require a power cycle reboot.  My previous post describing what I had done regarding software re-install and static ip setup resulted in success that lasted until I was absent for more than two days and the printer went into permanent sleep mode requiring a power cycle.

I have tried most everything and cannot continue to chase such a fickle problem. I agree it is time for HP to provide a solution.

gseven0,

how do you handle the problem of all-in-one going to sleep after 30 minutes ?

After the printer goes into sleep mode the only way I have been able to get it working again is to power cycle it like everyone else.  I got tired of pulling the plug from the back of the printer so I added a power strip with a switch which flicking the power switch has now become a SOP every time I go by the #$%^& thing. I bought the C4580 NIB on EBay so I can't really beat up on HP too much so I am hoping the rest of you push HP to come up with a patch.

gseveno,

I think what you are describing is happening to me and my new printer.  The wireless light is flickering and the little screen is dark with colored lines running through it.  Is that what happenes when it goes to sleep or freezes up?  I too am ready to box mine up and take it somewhere, but also bought NIB from ebay store.  thanks

The wireless light should never flicker.  The wireless LED should be on, off or possibly a fast-blink in the case of an internal printer fault (in which case the display will be white with a numeric error code).

Also, the display behaviour sounds wrong.

Does power-cycling the printer change this behavior?

The printer should still be under warranty.  I would give HP support a call for this issue.
