Wish I could help you. My printer self-corrected over a period of a few weeks. Now there are certain things that print slowly again. I think it's kind of irresponsible that HP doesn't offer a FREE phone consultation help line -- it's clear that these problems are not user induced. There are def problems with the product. I would suggest you run the printer self-diagnostics a few times. It may jog the printer into "self-correcting", but of course that's not a great answer.Sorry.

ME TOO here my 6180 which worked fine started displaying "improper shutdown... hit OK   then it seem sto cycle over and over again endlessly.  Oddly enough about two dats ago it reset to the print screen and worked for a print job then it started same thing all over again and endlessly displays the message cycles, message etc ,  Now it won't STOP AND HAS BEEN doing THIS FOR A WEEK. any ideas: capt@cardmp.com

Only thing I can suggest, no guarantees...

- Turn off the printer.

- Then unplug it.

- While it is unplugged, hold down the Power button for 20-30 seconds.

- Plug it back in.

- Press the power button to turn on the printer.

This was a trick one of the repair techs told me a long time ago; it clears it some of the programming or cpacitors or something; I can't remember exactly -- it may solve a variety of problems, but I don't know if it will solve your particular problem. Good luck.

smartfriend you are my savior!

I was getting very furious about HP last night and planning just to throw away my C6180 when I discovered your post. It worked perfectly in my case. Everything is fine now.

Thank you so much.

I am having the same problem. The solution posted #/6 doesn't work after unplugging as instructed. After a couple dozen on/off cycle the machine shuts down.

Is it a hardware problem that is unfixable? Or can it be remedied by re-installing the software?

If not the other option left to to purchase and replacement C6180 since I have about $300 in cartridges. Or is there an upgrade that takes these C6180 cartridges?

I have had the same problem since last year but none of the solutions worked, you would think that HP would have at least made some comment that a fix was or was not available.

Decided to box up my 6180 and buy a new 7280 as the ink cartridges are the same and I got it for a decent price, I just hope that it doesn't suffer the same problem as the 6180.

If anyone comes up with a solution I can resurrect the old one hopefully.

VERY helpful here in 2010.  It worked.  I tried all the other solutions too.
