I could have sworn I posted this earlier, but I can't find it. I am having issues with scanning to computer with my 7520 and 2540. The scan to computer doesn't work.  On the 7520 when I attempt to scan a document to the computer in PDF format, it works. When I scan to JPG format, I get errors. "The action "Move Finder Items" encountered an error' and "no connection" appear. I have both printers installed wirelessly and hard wired. On the hard wired installation the "Scan to Computer" is enabled but doesn't work. On the wireless (Bonjour) it shows "Scan to Computer" is not enabled. The little Scan icon on the bottom of my screen doesn't give you an option of which printer to use. It just shows the 7520. The only way I can scan anything with the 2540 is through the printer's website. The odd thing is. I have a laptop hooked up wirelessly in the living room and I have no problems scanning to the computer with both printers. Just my desktop is having issues. How can I fix this?

Can a power outage cause problems. We had an outage in my area yesterday.

Hi @Helen

I am happy to hear that they are both working again.

It sounds like you might have a 'detect separate items' option selected some where in the settings.

Let's take a look in the HP Scan for this feature and if you find it unselect it.

I just checked a Mac I have access to and I found a setting that would do the same as 'detect separate items', it is called item bounds and is in the Crop section. If your crop section has item bounds selected, change it to none.

The setting you are seeking may depend on the version of Mac you are running. If you can not find the options I have identified above, let me know which version of mac you have and I will do some additional research to find the fix!  🙂

Since we do have the initial issue resolved, please consider marking the post that resolved the issue as 'Accept as Solution' so others in the community can find the solution easily. Thanks.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi @Helen

I see you are having difficulty scanning to your Mac using the Photosmart 7520, and the Deskjet 2540. Please use the following steps to troubleshoot the issue;

Scrub/ Uninstall

  • Open the Applications folder > HP or Hewlett Packard folder > HP Uninstaller
  • Click continue, click on one of the printers in the list.
  •  Hold down Control, Option and Command, While holding the three buttons down,
  • Click uninstall. This removes ALL HP software

Reset Printing System

  1. Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click System Preferences.
  2. In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.
  3. Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
  4. Click OK to confirm the reset.
  5. Type the correct Name and Password.
  6. Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.

Repair Disk Permissions
  1. On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
  2. Double-click Disk Utility.
  3. Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
  4. Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
  5. Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.

Restart the printer. Now you can download and install the printer software and install it.

When you add the printer, please ensure you are using the HP driver, not the AirPrint driver.

  1. Select Add other Printer or Scanner
  2. Select the printer you are adding and next to 'Use' you can select the printer driver

Please let me know if you can scan now with both printers. Thanks.

I noticed something else. The 2540 is OK.Everything works OK. I'm leaving the 2540 alone.  It's the 7520 that I'm having problems with. When I scan to PDF, it saves the document to JPG. When I try to save it as a JPG, I get a message stating "Scan Failed" or "no connection".  How would I just reset the 7520?

Hi @Helen

You can do the steps above still, but the first step will need to be modified;

Scrub/ Uninstall

  • Open the Applications folder > HP or Hewlett Packard folder > HP Uninstaller
  • Click continue, click on the 7525 in the list.
  •  Hold down Control, Option and Command, While holding the three buttons down,
  • Click uninstall. This removes ALL HP software

This will remove only the 7525, then you can complete the steps from the previous post, up to and including re-installing the 7525.

Please let me know how this works out. Thanks.

For some reason, both printers were uninstalled, but that's OK. Everything appears to be working fine now. I did notice that when I scan to computer to a JPG file, 3 files are created with 3 different images. It's not the whole page, just separate images of the  page. Why is this happening?

I am running Mac 10.9.4. I'll see if I can find anything on my end.

OK, I think I figured it out, sort of. I changed the item bounds to none, but it works ok now when I scan directly from the printer. If I scan from the icon at the bottom of  my desktop, I have to manually change it. So I don't know if there is a way to permanently change that function from the desktop.
