This answer doesn't help anyone, I have the same question. I installed using the CD over a year ago, haven't needed to scan anything until now. Which button is it? We shouldn't have to go through all of this to use a simple feature on your product and we shouldn't have to download this and that to make it work when we followed the install instructions. So if you could provide an actual answer that would be great.

Hi @Becky13,
Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the post regarding information on how to scan and copy from your HP printer using the copy button. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Great description of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that.
- Are you trying to copy directly from the printer without any intervention from the computer?
- Are you using a computer along with the printer to scan images and save it on the computer?
- If it is the latter, then please provide the operating system that is being used along with its version. Is it a Windows or MAC operating system?
.For a start please try this link on how to copy directly from the printer.
It gives you a step by step guide on how to do it.
Step 2: Load the original document or photo, and then print the copy job
Load the original document or photo on the scanner glass.
-
Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
-
Lift the scanner lid.
-
Place the original document or photo with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position the document or photo according to the engraved guides around the glass.
Figure : Place the document or photo on the scanner glass
-
Close the scanner lid.
-
Press the Start Copy Black button (
) or the Start Copy Color button (
) on the control panel to start the copy job.
You can increase the number of copies by pressing the button multiple times. Copying starts 2 seconds after the last button press.
If you want to scan to the PC on a windows computer then you could check this document How to Scan from the Computer (Windows). for step by step instructions and FAQs.
If you want to scan to the computer on a MAC then you could check this document How to Scan from the Computer (Mac). or step by step instructions and FAQs.
Also look up the printer’s user guide document for more information. Please check pages 49 to 56 on how to copy and scan
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

If using a windows computer, search for HP then open the HP printer assist for the printer you have installed (I am assuming you have installed the software, if not you must do so). You should have this show up on your screen
Click on Scan and then follow the prompts. There is no actual Scan button on the printer itself.

The problem is not the button...I know how to scan documents, but when I try to scan a photo, I get a picture with a white background. My other printer has a 'photo' option to avoid the white background.
