Photosmart 5520
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

I am unable to connect to my printer from my Mac and print a PDF document.

I reset the printer settings and ran a networks diagnostics test from the disk utility, however when attempting to add the computer it comes up with:

An error occured while trying to add the selected device - unable to communicate with printer at this time.

However I am able to print off a printer status report.

Please help.

Thank you

Hello @efb89,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I would like to assist you today with resolving the network connectivity issues that you're experiencing when trying to connect your HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One Printer for network printing on your Mac OS X 10.7 computer. Can I please have you run through the steps below.

Step 1: Check Connectivity:

  1. On the control panel of the printer select the Setup button (wrench)
  2. Select Wireless
  3. Select Display Network Configuration
  4. Take note of the IP Address
  5. Open the internet browser on your Mac
  6. In the address bar type in the IP Address (with no www.)
  7. Search to that page
  8. A website for your printer should now open.
  • If the website for your printer opens successfully: It indicates that your printer and computer are 'talking' wirelessly on the network. Please proceed to Step 4.

  • If the website for your printer fails to open: It indicates that your printer and computer are not 'talking' wirelessly. This would cause you not to be able to add your printer into your Mac for wireless printing. To resolve this, please proceed with the troubleshooting steps below.

Step 2: Run Wireless Setup Wizard:

  1. Select the Setup button (wrench) button again
  2. Select Wireless
  3. Select Wireless Setup Wizard
  4. Select your Network Name (SSID)
  5. Enter your Wireless Password (key). This is case sensitive.
  6. Once the wireless is connected, please gather the IP Address.
  7. On your Mac, open the internet browser and search to the IP Address website for your printer

Step 3: Powercycle Network:

  1. First, unplug the power cable to your Router
  2. Once your Router is unplugged, turn off your printer
  3. Next, shut down your computer
  4. After 30 seconds to 1 minutes, plug your Router back in
  5. Next, turn on your printer
  6. Turn on the computer

After a few minutes the internet connection will return. Please check on your computer to ensure that you can browse to websites before continuing. Once your internet is working, please gather the IP Address off your printer and open the printers website again.

Once you're able to access the printers website than proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Install Printer:

1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.

2. Click Print & Scan

3. Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer

4. Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu. Ensure that the HP Photosmart driver is being used.

Once the printer is added in successfully, please test printing to verify that everything is working.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck! 🙂

The information in the post of how to fix the problem did not work.  It says that my computer and printer are talking when I follow the steps in number one.  Then when I get to step 4, it tells me it cannot connect wirelessly with the printer!

What you need to do is add the printer in the settings before you go and print. This should solve the problems you're having.
