Hello dluis
Glad to hear that your issue was resolved.
Hello Meloney
What errors or messages are you getting when you try to install the printer? Also how is the printer connected to the computer? What happens when you try to follow the instructions I provided above?
Are you able to scan from another application such as MS Paint? If not sure how please follow the article below.
How to Scan in Windows without Using HP Software

I have tried this supposed solution THREE times, and it does NOT work!!!
When I attempt to install the latest version of the software downloaded from your site, I continue to get a screen saying "can't find file specified" and in the title-bar it refers to 7z2E9D or something like that. I have uninstalled everything I have related to HP. Even when the software tries to remove itself when the installation fails, I get a message saying 'the uninstaller has stopped working". This is the CRAZIEST thing I have ever seen. It won't install and it won't uninstall. What kind of idiocy is this?
I have removed all temp folders starting with "7z", I have downloaded and run this supposed "wizard" that can diagnose what the problem is, and NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING is working!
Do you get the sense that I am PISSED OFF? That's cause I am. Because I know it will be asked;
I am running 7-64 bit Ultimate, on an AMD Athalon II x2 250 processor at 3.01 GHz and 8 gig of RAM. At this point I am desperate for help!

Hello txbbqdude
What is the exact path that is in the title-bar?
What happens is Windows is trying to search for a specific temporary folder that no longer exists. This can be due to multiple reasons.
When the HP installer extracts data to the temp directory it gives it a random name that starts with "7z", and is supposed to look inside the folder that was just created. Sometimes the MSI (Microsoft Software Installer) thinks it is in another directory and thus provides an error when you go to install.
Follow the steps below.
- Run the installer again and write down or take a screenshot of the file/path that can't be found.(Especially the exact name of the 7z folder)
- Run the Microsoft FixIt Tool. Microsoft FixIt will remove corrupt Windows registry keys involved in installations and un-installations and resolve other problems with installations.
Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled
Let me know if the problem persists or if the Microsoft FixIt tool resolves your installation problem.

Travis, first thanks for being nice enought to respond to my complaint.
Secondly, the exact "7z" file name/number is: 7zS2E9B. However, I will try to run the install program again just to get you a screen-shot. Then I'll try your suggesting of running the Microsoft "Fix it" program. I gotta tell you I don't have a lot of faith in Microsoft either, but I'll take the time to try your suggestion. I tried to add the screenshot here, but it won't work.

Hello txbbqdude
I have seen the Microsoft FixIt tool work first hand, one time my CD drive was having Device Manager errors. I verified the hardware was in working by installing it in another computer. I then stumbled upon Microsoft FixIt and after running it and restarting, my disk drive worked again. I have also seen it work for others with software problems. Of course not everyone has the same exact system hardware or the exact same softwares installed so results may vary. If Microsoft FixIt does not resolve the problem let me know.

Hello txbbqdude
Since that didn't work lets go ahead and "trick" the Microsoft installer. The way we will do this is rename the 7z folder to the folder it is looking for. That way when it tries to locate the "specified file" it will be able to do so. I suggested the other option first as this, while it should allow the software to install, doesn't "fix" the problem that your computer is looking in the wrong folder.
- Go to the temp folder by typing %temp% into the search/run box in the start menu.
- Delete all files and folders in the temp directory. (Some might say they can't be deleted; you can just skip those)
- Run the installer (Photosmart C5280 Full Feature Software (Windows 7))
- When the software install window opens (after it finishes extracting) press Cancel or Exit.
- Go back to the %temp% folder as shown in step 1.
- There should only be one 7z folder.
- Rename it to "7zS2E9B".
- Enter the folder and go to the Util folder. Then go to the CCC folder, and run the Uninstall_L4. While you have run it previously this is a precaution to make sure that nothing is left from your latest installation efforts.
- Restart your computer.
- Go to the temp folder as shown in step 1.
- This time locate the file Setup.exe and run it. The installer should now find the files it was looking for and complete installing.
If the problem persists or you receive different errors let me know.

Travis, this is unbelievable! I tried all suggestions, NOTHING works!
First of all, when I went to the only 7z folder in the %Temp% directory, the only thin in there was a .dll file (HPSLPSVC64.DLL). Next, I re-booted, went back to the %Temp% director and there is no setup folder anywhere.
Everytime in plug in the USB cord to the printer and computer, Win7 installs the drivers and basic software, and every time I try one of HPs "suggestions", it goes and uninstalls or removes the drivers again and again. I an TIRED of this crap! Why can't you people make software that WORKS as intended! I am wasting HUGE amounts of my time with this garbage.

Travis, what I wound up having to do is try re-installing again (which I did twice). Then I wound up with about 4 Temp folders that started with "7z". I went to the one where I found "setup" application along with 43 other files and renamed it 7z2E9B. Then went back in and ran uninstall-4 batch file you told me to run, PLUS I deleted ALL other files in the Temp folder, although a couple would not delete.
I rebooted, then went back to the Temp folder and launched the setup program within the 7z2E9B folder. FINALLY that allowed all the programs to be installed EXCEPT, when it got near the end, I got a message; "Fatal Error During Installation". In the title bar it referred to a file "hpzetup.exe" "-f" then something else "C:\Program..." the rest ran off the title bar from there and I could not see the rest of the message. Also, The Solution Center Software will NOT run. I get a message saying it "cannot run because my device installation is not complete"...blah blah blah. But as you can see in one of the screenshots, the computer told me the installation IS complete and the "device is ready to use".
During the installation, the thought occured to me to burn all 43 files in the Temp folder I renamed 7z2E9B to a CD and install the programs that way. However, the CD would not run at all when I tried to launch it.
So this is where I am stuck at present. The Photo Essentials software seems to work ok, but NOT Solution Center. So what about that hpzsetup error? I see a file by that name in the same Temp folder, but nothing happens when I double-click it.

Hello txbbqdude
You are doing great. Since we are past the error about the wrong/missing folder lets work on the new one. Microsoft Software Installer (MSI) Fatal Errors can be caused by many different things. These can range from missing files, permission problems, or other software being installed. Typically they come with a 4-digit code that specify the error. Sometimes the error that is produced is vague, however, Windows Event View will sometimes log the error in more depth that the error box shows on the screen. The steps below explain how to look for the error code from Windows Event Viewer.
- Click the Windows icon (
), type Event Viewer in the search box, and then press Enter . The Event Viewer opens.
- In the Event Viewer frame (on the left), click Windows logs .
- Under Windows logs , click Application . The Event Viewer results display in the middle pane.
- In the middle frame in the Source column, find the most recent
Error entry from HP .
Tip: You can click the Source column to sort in alphabetical order to make it easier find the most recent entry from HP. You can also click Date (or any of the other columns) to sort.
- Click the
Error entry. The error details display in the General tab .
- In the General tab , look for a numbered code. This is the specific error message that you need to troubleshoot.
- Make a note of the error code, and then continue to the next step for the appropriate troubleshooting.SOURCE: A 'Fatal Error' (MSI error) Displays on the Computer During HP Software Installation in WindowsIf you locate the error code let me know or you can see the link above for the proper article.
