How to correct printer’s scanner feature
Printer must be turned on
- Open – System Preference – Desktop – bottom of page – grey square with gears.
- Click – Print & Scan
- What page should look like – left side –you will see
“printer” in grey box. Under it, it should read “.idle”
- Click – scan
- Click – open scanner (printer will scan)
- Click on: Name – and name document O.K.
If printer is “paused” it will not scan – check grey box with printer photo.
- Right click over grey bar
- Click “reset” printing system
- Accept – all existing documents will be deleted – this is O.K.
- Page will ask for your computer password that was given when purchased
- Click the “plus” , not the “minus” box under white page
- Left Click the name of your printer and click “add”
- Printer “reset” will say “idle”
- It is ready to scan again
- Click – the picture of a” lock” on the bottom left corner to “lock and unlock” printer change mode.
Somehow this printer jumps off “ .idle” to “pause”.

Continually unable to scan. Get an error message: "No scan options. Refer to documentation to troubleshoot." There isn't even a mention of scanning in the documents that accompany the instrument! How do I get this turkey to scan?

Hi TimothyJDavis,
I'd like to help you get your turkey to scan.
Which operating system do you have, and which version? If you are unsure click the appropriate link below.
How to tell Which Mac operating system you have
How to tell Which Windows operating system you have
I suspect you have done some troubleshooting already, can you briefly describe what you have tried so far? Once I hear back from you, I can post back with the appropriate steps to try. You may find some steps you have done already. Knowing what you have already done might help me to determine the root cause more efficiently.
Can you also confirm for me that you do have the 4500 as stated in the original posters title and which one you have. Click here to find out > Which printer model you have

Thanks, looking forward to hearing from you. Gobble gobble

Ok i think i found the solution , seems to be very easy
First of all make sure you have installed on you'r pc " HP Solution Center"
Connect the printer to pc and open the HP Solution Center
Go to Setting's
Go with you'r mouse on scan setting's ( don't click it just put the mouse on it ) and window will open
From the window that has oppen select " Scan to... Setup" chose whatever you want from that list and click apply and ok!
If this is not solving the problem then select the FRONT PANEL SCAN BUTTON SETTINGS and make the same thing as you did with Scan to ... Setup option
This solved my problem with " No scanning options please reffer to bla bla bla "
Have a good day

Just wanted to say thank you re: the fix of going to the HP Solutions site, clicking on settings (bottom of page), hovering over Scan to Setup and choosing shortcuts to be added to device. Then click on Update Device.
I did all of this and could scan from the Solutions Center or the printer itself. So far so good.
Thanks so much and too bad that HP did not put out specific directions as to how to fix.
Am disgusted with this printer and will be replacing. (maybe that is what HP wants to generate more revenue)!!!! Would think that they would be willing to give a rebatement good towards the purchase of another printer they have that doesn't have this problem rather than lose business to Epson etc.!!!!
